I'm a fanboy as I have one but any of the Sony Xperia Z series phones are great. I'm using the original Z which came out at the beginning of last year and it doesn't lag or slow down or freeze or anything. The screen is not too big and not too small and decent quality. The camera is pretty decent and the waterproofing is a bonus. It still gets the latest versions of Android too.
I've only managed to put one tiny scratch on the screen and that is because it was in my jersey pocket with a small knog light with a metal clasp. Pay £13+vat a month for a sim only contract with unlimited texts, 500 minutes and 500mb of data from EE and you can't go wrong.
