  • I'm off to Spain on tour tomorrow, going to Alicante, San Sebastián, Zaragoza and finally Madrid.

    Jesus Christ I'm excited.

Been eating vegetarian food all week in preparation for the seafood/steak onslaught.

Last time I went to Spain I was in a Granada where I had deep friend lambs brains. It was great but felt a bit like eating battered pâté. Bit too rich....probably because my mate ordered a ration rather than a tapas.

  • Mmmmm.... Battered pate :)

  • San Sebastián - unreal food. If you want to go upmarket but can't afford Arzak (about €250 a head) try Mirador de Ulia. Hands down one of the best meals I've ever eaten and not that expensive. The view is phenomenal.

  • Been to San Sebastián twice and these are my favourites:

Morgan C'est Ici http://www.morgandonostia.com/ - amazingly good value lunch menu 3 course + wine for 20 euros, great for when you've had enough of the pintxos bars
Bodegón Alejandro - another good sit-down option, cheaper than the Michelin starred places but still great cooking

    Pintxos:
Bar Paco Bueno - erratic opening hours, excellent gambas
Bar Zeruko - terrible decor but amazing food, more 'experimental' pintxos
Atari Gastroteka - really good quality, great for the classics
Bar Casa Senra - on the other side of the river, I remember it didn't look like much but had excellent veal cheeks
A Fuego Negro - I didn't think this was as great as some reviewers seem to, but definitely still worth trying. Crab ice cream was the wrong side of experimental for me!

General rule: order from the menu/chalkboard, rather than picking up the stale bits of bread and whatever on the bar. Even if you don't know quite what you've ordered, I always think it's better to go for the freshly cooked pig's ear than the soggy old croquetas that've been sitting there all day.

Also take a trip out of the city to one of the cider houses, they're all pretty much the same and do the same menu (Salt cod omlette, salt cod and peppers, massive T-bone steak, cheese and walnuts) with unlimited cider refills. We went to this one which is one of the more well-known http://www.petritegi.com/en.html

Another good place out of town is this amazing fish restaurant in Getaria http://www.restauranteelkano.com/
