  • These PDW look nice but very heavy?

  • Oh man I know it, I never thought any form of mudguard would be something I'd be excited about but I can't wait. I simply can not be bothered/do not wake up early enough to get a train to work any more, so I'm building a bombproof all weather monster to see me right through the winter for years to come.

  • 454g (according to PDW) sound about right for a decent mudguard.

SKS Chromoplastic 35mm is 488g according to road.cc.

  • Yep, full mudguards ftw. Depending on how thin the tires are you could try Crud Road Racers, but for durability I'd definitely go with P-Clips and proper guards. Be aware that any full front guard will cause even worse toe-overlap, assuming you have it already

  • Yeah dude I'm going to go for the PDW's. They are going on a 51 Dart V2 with a fork rake of 43mm, it will be snug but I should be just about ok.

  • That would look real smart on the Dart actually.

Another option is to drill a small thread on the drop out (if the plate is large enough), keep it looking smart.

  • Just fitted PDWs to steamroller, pretty tidy. pics tomo

  • @Antidotes, @edscoble
the big plus with axle mounted mudguard stays is that you do not have to adjust the stays when you change wheel position. (gear change, chain wear etc.)
also if you get adapters with slots rather than holes you don't have to thread the track nuts all the way off to remove them. this is especially handy in a situation where you have to remove the wheel. (puncture, gear change etc.)

  • Following up the road racer/race blade discussion earlier, is the consensus that race blades are better? I've been searching for some decent mudguards for winter and it's between these two. Any advice? Images for clearance below. Cheers.

  • SKS Raceblade long

  • Have been looking lots at SKS velos(with stays) any huge advantages of the commuter/longboard/others vs the cheapo ones?

  • Has anybody got any pictures of the tightness of the clearances with the PDW guards? Trying to work out how much room they need and if I've got enough.

  • Can I expect to be able to use the same pair of mudguards on my most-of-year 28s and with Finnish-winter studded 35s? Or will I need to get a pair so big they'll look daft with the 28s on?

Or should I just get a cheap second hand mountain bike, stick huge studded tyres on it and wreck it?

  • Now I've typed that out the second options is starting to look a lot more sensible. Brooks saddle at -25C doesn't sound like a good idea.

  • Just received my Raceblade Longs and assembled them off bike. Build quality feels incredible, not needed a single tool yet either.

  • Thanks very much Dammit. Is that a 25c tyre? Looks like you can get the guard to only take up a few extra mm space above and to the sides of the tyre?

  • I'll take some measurements tomorrow, they are very good mudguards in my view.

  • My Brooks saddles have done ok at -35 C, much better than I've fared.
Cold is not a problem, sustained wet is.

  • gracias. wish they were a bit cheaper, looking like I might have to get some

  • Pic doesn't really slow the clearance well if you're talking about the gap between the tyres and mudguard.

Either way, it generally should have a reasonable amount of room, but not too much that it'll produced a noticeable amount of side spray.

Waiting for mine to arrived, it will be a tight fit with wide rims pushing the tyres closer to 27mm than 25mm.

  • I meant between tyre and fork, seatstays, chainstays etc. Although I also have caliper brakes to get in the way. My 25mm tyres measure 26mm wide on velocity A23 rims, hoping that will be fine in terms of mudguard width. It's gon be tight...

  • Does anyone happen to have the rear-most tail part of some Crud Road Racers going spare?

I fitted mine all ready for winter, and on the first ride the fucking tail bit fell off. Without that, I discovered this morning, you're basically not stopped any spray at all.

I've got a spare rear nose (front mech protector bit) if anyone wants to trade?

  • think i do. pm me to text me to remind me to check when i get home. e2.

  • @Mechamorgan yeah, broke a set last year should be about somewhere in the broken bits.
