Erm... how do you think it works in email and usenet?
Quoted text contains partial headers sufficient to identify and attribute the original post. Obviously the way web fora implemented it was better, with direct links to the quoted posts, but that's why hypertext is a good thing, and dumb markdown is a relic of the 1970s which should never have been considered for a new product.
It does that in Opera too. I hope both problem will be fixed when we get proper quoting, like we've had on email, usenet and web fora for about 30 years.
