4 realz or CGI? Vertical recovery to land is a big milestone if it's real.
-
• #1454
Yeh, SpaceX have been testing it for a while now. Its like watching sci-fi.

Just caught up with latest flights, they haven't put the 22nd August 2014 flight on their YouTube channel

This is from a film AKA "Sky Fighters" just in case did not already know...
Terrible but awesome at the same time. The arial photography is amazing and not CGI - makes top gun look like models stuck on sticks.
anyway, there is a blu ray version floating around with passable subtitles if anyone wants to enjoy the engrossing story, not just the planes. -

For the first 60 miles, yes.

I guess a Cruise missile 'flies' B-)

I don't understand the SpaceX thing.
It's pretty cool to see it climbing to 1km and landing again, but to actually make it into orbit with a useful payload plus the fuel needed to decelerate and land seems a bit of a stretch.
-
• #1464
The first stage, and particularly the strap-on boosters, never get to anything like orbital velocity, so the fuel needed to decelerate is reasonable. SpaceX business model is based on the extra fuel and having the take-off thrust 20% more than is needed for just the payload is cheaper than binning an expensive set of rocket engines every launch.

Not so high, but more wow factor:

And the lunar lander challenge competition a few years ago led to a lot of pretty impressive stuff at a smaller scale:

Just stumbled upon a killer lecture: http://www.aerosociety.com/Events/Event-List/1754/The-History-of-the-RollsRoyce-RB21122-Turbofan-Engine
And it's free.
Basically, this was the most advanced engine in the world when it was developed, and it bankrupted Rolls Royce which forced nationalisation and the intervention of the UK and US government. It eventually became one of the world's most reliable engines and transformed intercontinental air travel.
And this is a free lecture by a former director of engineering for Rolls Royce.
Can't argue with free + interesting.
