^ Just to add to the above, I borrowed my sister's mk5 Golf GTI recently. Had the oil level light come on when I was in the arse end of nowhere after midnight. Had to drive 20 miles or so to a garage and spend £20 on a 1L bottle of oil. Checked the manual then and if it's red oil pressure you stop instantly, if it's yellow oil level drive until you can sort it out.
