Oil pressure warning lights are designed to come on before the pressure drops to a dangerous level. It's the point of their existence.
Maybe if Crop was caning it round Cadwell your comment that 'usually by the time it comes on there is damage' might be right, but if s/he was idling in traffic it just ain't true.
Especially if the light might be an oil level light, which I'd guess a 2010 Goof would have and which would probably come on before a pressure light in the circumstances...
Once again, how is oil pressure produced in a engine? Please google what PSI oil pressure warning switch operate at, and what roughly what PSI oil pressure is expected at idle, as you won't believe how wrong you are.
EDIT - Does oil level only come on before start up and a few seconds after?
