  • ah ryman

  • donington on monday. woot. i think it might go bang

  • Looks good and feels soooonice

  • Edit. Just seen updated page.

Was it not retail magnet Theo Prifitirole who chromed his limo for charity then kept it...

  • Right,
So my girlfriend owns a 2010 golf that was due a service.
She took it to be serviced and to get a fresh mot, then took it back to where we park it.
Yesterday we got in the car and began a journey to Wiltshire from Dalston, by the time we had gotten to Essex Road the oil light had come on and a loud warning beep occured, by the time we got to angel station it happened again and then when we were in traffic on Pentonville Road I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet (oil on the manifold) so we pulled over and I had a look - oil everywhere!

Called my breakdown recovery and went to the pub to wait and to eat.

Turns out the garage had failed to remove the old rubber/gasket when installing a new oil filter.
Also the car still tells you upon startup that it's due a service.

I intend on going and having words with the garage later this week.

    Advice/thoughts?

  • shit on their bonnets?

  • Get a written report from your recovery people, present to garage, either get it sorted in a timely fashion or end up in a legal battle with the garage.

Wrt service indicator on startup, the indicator needs resetting. These two simplest of simple things combined suggests you need a new garage.

  • Go and have words with the garage with written proof.
Don't be a dick about it, don't threaten to get legal from the off. Keep calm, it's only a car.

  • How much oil had the engine lost? What was the oil level after.

NH is right, and I concur.

  • Oh, that is not good.

Empty as in not registering on the dipstick..

  • Exactly that.

  • It won't be empty. You'd know if it was empty as the engine would have seized up. Oil lights come on a decent time before there is a real danger. It would have been better if you stopped immediately, but assuming the car is now back and running OK you've probably avoided totes disaster.

Get a friendly resolution with the garage and never use them again.

  • Been planning on asking them to clean the engine bay as it is now covered with oil due to their incompetence and some form of refund on the service/compensation for wasting a load of my time and risking the death of the car etc

  • And obviously never using them again!
Recommendations near Leyton for the future?

  • Oil light comes on when there is low pressure, usually by the time it comes on there is damage.

  • I'd be looking at getting the rocker cover off to check the cam for scoring and wear, I'd get a compression check and see what is going on. I'd aslo want the sump off to check the big ends for scoring. Also to clean out the sump as the oil level drops the oil gets cooked and becomes thick and sticky.

On a 4 year old motor, I'd want this done. The garage has insurance to cover this.

EDIT - I'd also want a cyclinder leakage/leak down test.

Oh rly? Do tell me more Dr Porsche.

  • Ok you tell me why it will be fine?

But here is something for you to think about, I'll take small steps, how does an engine create oil pressure?

  • Depends on the engine. But I know on my Subaru if the oil light comes on then the engine is toast.
The two big boxer engine killers being oil starvation and knock.

  • For the record its the 1.2tsi.
