Thanks @bothwell and @danb. As I kind of expected this seems to be one of those areas where there are just too many variables to get a nice conclusive result.
My own contribution to science was about half a bulb, raw, through a garlic press, eaten on a cracker. I can confirm that this tastes very garlicky, but not as rank as expected. I feel better today, but I suspect a day off on the sofa is responsible for that. One more unreliable anecdote on the pile of misinformation!
