Is a Yashica T4 the compact camera to go for, or are there better compact camera alternatives?
-
• #8780
Depends on your budget, what you actually want to do with it, and a lot of other factors.

Here's some nice, albeit pricey / rare examples:

Hey actually I just want it to be simple, like yours, but TK is fucking taken!
It was when I realised this that I started changing it until I find something nice.
Also names with spaces are forbidden now.

T4 takes amazing pictures, has a great lens, meters well, is small, expensive and feels a bit delicate.
Mju II takes decent pictures, has a decent lens, frustratingly hit and miss autofocus, feels solid and can be picked up cheap.I prefer my T4 but the Mju II comes with me if I'm worried about the camera getting damaged.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I dislike the GR1 series... the viewfinder is IMPOSSIBLY small.
Prob just me not using them right.
T3 is a great choice, same lens as t4 minus hipster tax. Loving my Minilux last time I used it but its fragility is always a fear.
Still hope my dodgy Hexar that I bought off here is an easy fix... bloody old cameras.

Right, anyone got a 35mm neg scanner? I'm sick of the hit and miss of lab scans.
Looking for a neg scanner rather than a flatbed. -

Did a blog post of a few snaps.. can't remember which camera I used. Maybe Hexar. Maybe not.

Great snaps @chrisbmx116 the tones are so nice on the one with the headtube flare.
I bumped into Donny by chance in Norwich a few weeks ago and he just looked knackered - an 18-month frame backlog takes it out of you it seems!

Lovely blog post, Chris.
Shh ... 'pursue', not 'peruse' a career. :)

@Oliver Schick Cheers! My spelling is awful, and not made any better by cack handed typing.. thanks for catching that... fixed...

My spelling is awful
Only a few very minor typos, so not awful, and 'peruse' is something spell checkers do to a slightly mis-spelled 'pursue', I think. I suppose I could also have mentioned 'must of been', which should be 'must have been', but I hadn't read all the text yet. :)

Little preview of the many rolls I just got from the lab. Although one of the rolls was scanned twice so I've got 2 cds with the same images and a contact sheet with no matching set of scans. And the colour neg scans are WOEFUL. Need to use a friend's neg scanner to check that it's not just the images that are cack, otherwise I think it may be the last nail in the coffin for me getting lab scans and I'll just bite the bullet and get a neg scanner.
Mju II, Slide film of some sort.

T4 takes amazing pictures, has a great lens, meters well, is small, expensive and feels a bit delicate.
Mju II takes decent pictures, has a decent lens, frustratingly hit and miss autofocus, feels solid and can be picked up cheap.Agree that T4 takes superior pictures compared to Mju-II, though the more Mju-II pictures I see of other people the more I think the copy I had wasn't a great one (other peoples' pics being sharper / with more punch compared to mine).
Never had AF issues with my Mju-II though!
Also price difference here in Germany at least isn't great - about €80 for a Mju-II in good shape, bit over €100 for a T4...
..yea, I was; I'm just playin' around..
I would say yes of course, it's worth the investment - especially if you know that you're going to shoot a lot of 35mm in the future.
Keep in mind though that scanning is a rather fiddly, time-consuming task (if shops over here wouldn't ask so much for proper scans I'd definately let them do it), also see if your scanner comes with a proper scanning software (mine came with a "pro" version of SiverFast, which is much annoying to use, still a very capable program) - check this beforehand, as it might be expensive to buy later, and / or check if the scanner is compatible with VueScan.
Good luck, and have fun with the Klasse!
