Persuaded (it wasn't too difficult - she loves me!) my girlfriend to get on a bike - she bought a Charge Plug 3 weeks ago. She's very keen although unsurprisingly a little nervous of London traffic. To help we rode out together for 2 or 3 rides - in Sunday traffic - and she managed to smile and get out of the saddle and mingle with slow moving traffic and then get away when there was space. All good. This morning she decided to cycle to work. Standing with one foot on the ground behind a car at a T junction waiting for an opportunity to pull out and suddenly the car parked on her left reverses out of the parking space bumps her back wheel and pushes her a yard or so before she tumbles under the bike. He stops - winds his window down - says sorry love and drives off. She's fine - tells me she found a voice she didn't know she had and vocab she hadn't used for some time. But WTFFFFFFFFF.....

You should probably have a cup of tea and a lie down to recover from the experience.

Feel free to make a report to the police. They might even take notice as i) there was contact, and ii) they fucked off without providing any details.
It may be worth having the bike checked out (unless you're ok with doing that yourself).
Glad she's ok. A bit shit that her first experience is a bad one.

Yeah, the cunt that hit me and left got 6 points and a few hundred worth of fines. Report them.

Thanks guys - will pass on your views. She is fine - not discouraged - perhaps it's good news that her first 'contact' was not so serious and she will now be more aware. Bike is good - I checked it out - she loves it!!!! More than me maybe!!!

Today's fifteen minute ride through Bristol to the station was like an assault course of fuckwittery, from cars emerging from side roads without looking, to builders dumping a load of soil in the carriageway (pretty sure the CDM regulations frown on that).
Not looking forward to the London commute at the other end

Was advising a chap at mornington crescent to get some pedal straps when out of the corner of my eye I see a bloke on a folding bike faceplant into the pavement. No idea what happened to him, but he was up and walking about in no time!

The 7.57 from Herne Hill to Blackfriars was a joy this morning, I even got a seat...

I missed my train from Sydenham Hill to St Pancras this morning by a couple of minutes. I got the train to Victoria and walked in. Central London is weird.

Pootling along Hackney Road this morning, a bit of a jam ensues, it being rush hour.
An impatient gentleman decided he was far too important to wait with the rest of the traffic so he launched himself at full speed onto the pavement to avoid said jam. Promptly gets his chain stuck and falls off in a comedy fashion and ends up in a heap on the pavement.
Instant karma!

The 17.44 from Blackfriars to Herne Hill was a joy this evening... Think I'll ride into tomorrow's gig... I really want a Brompton! I'm sick of commuting on the gf's Pomp...

did 30 casual riding miles from east to west and back, marylebone rd still scares and stresses me as I constantly have to look for overtaking taxis and massive coaches. I wish there was a cycling lane.

Also what is the correct etiquette to take when someone has taken a dick move to over take then had to try and force themselves back into line should I yield or keep the pace that I was doing. Keeping the pace would of meant said dick going into the back of a car?
Group riding etiquette is the rider moving through (on the right in this case I guess) should slow and get back in behind. This works the safest. Chances of the random nodder knowing this is pretty remote though. They might just do it because they're sensible. Maybe. If they cut in on you (uninvited) you're evasive action (braking) obviously can cause problems with riders behind.

Check out the Btwin tilt. Belt drive, 20" rims, half the price of a brompton. And don't look as dorky. I'm tempted by one.

Back on the bike today. I have some wrist guards knocking around from my attempts to become a less crap skater so wore those. Works for now.

After four days off the commute proved to be an utter shi0fest today. Traffic was heavy and distinctly brain-cell light for some reason. Kudos for the stationary car at the side of the road that decided to pull out in front rather than allowing me right of way, only to slam on their brakes to around totalling a schoolboy and almost encouraging me to slam into the back of them. Thank you brakes.
And thank you brakes again for avoiding another collision as I was filtering on the right between two queues of stationary traffic. A car in front was allowing another to pull out and turn right, right as I was on a bit of charge. Threw out the anchors, and threw up an arm in surprise, to be informed by a positively saintly white van man, clearly full of public duty, who leaned out to say 'that's your fucking fault'. No doubt he would be wearing the same sour expression and using those same informative words had I slammed into the car and flew across its bonnet, as he stood over me watching me piss blood.
Actually I've no idea who's in the right there. It was my right of way, I was filtering on the right of a stationary queue, but obviously there is a strong chance that this could happen. However I would assume the other drivers signalling to the car that it is safe to perform the maneuver without thoroughly checking for filtering traffic (motorbikes frequently do the same along that stretch of road). Anyway I told him to fuck off and carried on filtering, albeit a little slower than before.

@Brun it was plenty safe to over take her when I thought about doing so. I check over my shoulder nothing coming, she then looked around, I slowed down as I thought she was going to move out to either over take someone else of avoid a parked car, she then moved back left so I thought she was letting me go but then she looked back again and just kept move across the road as I was trying to get around her. She eventually gave up move across and let me pass.
