Dynamo hubs

  • but on the other hand that's heavier and even though that thing ain't huge, it still adds to things that you have to carry.

That's the beauty of the dynamo hub/usb charger, you don't need to spunk out for a big battery, a small 5,000mAh would sufficient, or smaller if necessary.

  • @skinny: No reason that wouldn't work for charging a Garmin right? I'm assuming it'll do anything that plugs in USB?

  • @5awyr no reason why not, provide that the cable is a direct power one.

  • Yeah I used it for garmin, phone, kindle.

It has a 2.1a output and a 1a output too.

  • Interestingly SP will be offering centrelock disc hubs (alongside the existing 6-bolt models) next year too now that Shimano have opened the license.

  • right.

I'm thinking of hoofing out on a dynamo set up for touring-edelux front light, son28 Klassik dynamo front wheel, with charging implement so save fucking about with batteries.

Anything better than the Busch and Muller? It seems well steep for what it is (90£ everywhere from what I can see?)

  • Actually I'm thick. Will just go with the Luxos and use the integrated USB charger.

  • Waiting for my Supernova Pure E3 to arrive from Ze Germans.

Still unclear if it can be run inverted.

  • Dammit, are you intending to do any gadget charging as well? Or just lighting? Have you opted for the tail light as well?

  • Yes, I am getting the tail-light that fits on the rack.

When in full touring mode the Time Machine will have two dynamos, one of which will be used for charging gubbins.

  • You are Noah AICMFP

  • Rose is always a good place for the lighting stuff.
Just got one of these from there

I've yet to fit it, but it's half the price for a huge light output...

  • I want to get in to the dynamo game..

Thinking about putting them on my commuter, which I leave locked up all over the place. How easily nickable or desirable are they?

Also, do you reckon I can hook up 2 x front lights and 1 x rear?

  • I use pinhead skewers to hold the wheel securely and security torx bolts for the light. So far so good! I still don't like leaving the bike for any length of time in a city centre even then.

  • Why would you want 2 X front lights?

  • I just thought it would look good with two front lights mounted on my rack on my cargo bike

  • Why would you need 2 dynamos!? Bigger is better.

  • I do have two dynamos on one bike, it is true.

  • dyno trike?

  • ^^ Extrawheel trailer. Good place to store a spare front wheel.

Coming up to winter I might fit my IQ Fly and dig out my SON wheel. So much nicer to not have to worry about recharging batteries all the time.

  • Indeed - rather inspired by the world of audax, I now commute with a son and Cyo combination, including a mudguard mounted dynamo powered rear light. Lovely not to have to think about lights. And it is fun to ride along in front of someone and switch on the rear light from the handlebars.

  • So i went for:

    shimano alfine disc dynamo hub

    2 x B + M Lumotec IQ Cyo T senso plus 60 lux

1 x AXA Slim Steady dynamo back light

Saw some dude in a video showing a dual headlight, dual tail light set up so two headlights should be fine.

  • I've used a standard SON dynohub for years for Audaxing and they work great. Never noticed the extra drag.

While SONs were the go-to for years, LEDs have changed the formula. A number of new generation dynamos are making the choice more difficult. One of the coolest, I think, is the Velogical: tiny, rim powered, weighing only 75g and 70% efficient. Some long distance riders are combining these with strorage/USB chargers--- running their lights off the batteries being charged by the dynamo rather than directly powered. A popular open source/community DIY project is the German Forumslader: http://www.forumsloader.org (unfortunately only in German). The Velogical runs 150 EURO--- they even make a variant optimized for something like the Forumslader instead of lights--- and the cost to built a Forumslader will probably be between 70 and 150 Euro (using one of the kits). For standard Audaxing a lot of overkill but for....

  • Built my dynamo wheel and rigged up the two cyo lights under the front rack of my cargo bike and a rear light on the rear rack.

Amazing, so bright and i dont notice any drag whatsoever when riding.

Will try and get a picture.
