Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • I'm seeing a lot of the Cloudflare "this isn't borked, this isn't borked either, so THIS must be borked" page recently.

Recently as-in, not within the last 24 hours?

  • It's not happened today, that I recall - last few days.

  • Haven't seen the borked page yet, but moderator forum has been pretty capricious in general today.

  • capricious

That's just me in general. I'm for work-reduction, not work-creation.

  • It's not happened today, that I recall - last few days.

Yeah, we have a good candidate for the root cause and have an experiment on the go which we believe handles it.

That said... it does not appear to be a permanent fix, but it buys us time.

  • I'm for work-reduction

..just imagine we'd merge all the things.. less threads > less traffic > less problems > less work!

    : ]

  • I am getting the slowness and timeouts - but no longer the cloudflare errors.
Instead I get the Microcosm page cannot be displayed error

  • One little thing that bothers me about the new forum, is that if you are looking at eg. page 2 of 'Today', and you click on page 3, I believe the forum recalculates the timing of the posts. What I mean is that sometimes a thread you already saw on page 2 gets bumped back onto page 3 because there have been new posts in the meantime. I think the opposite happens as well - sometimes you miss threads that would have been on the top of page 3 when you are viewing page 2, and then by the time you go onto page 3, they've made their way to the bottom of page 2, and you miss them. I'm pretty sure the old forum took this into account - so if you clicked page 3 after reading to the end of page 2, everything stayed in the same order.

Not sure I've explained that in a way that makes sense, but I can try again if not :)

Same for me, or sometimes just nothing - the page keeps trying to load but just stays blank

  • Yeah - getting it intermittently - last one was just a moment ago when clicking on the "hour record" thread:

    Server Error
We're sorry, there was a temporary error when we tried to process your request.

The error has been logged. Please try again later.

Click here to go back to the homepage.

Refresh takes you to the thread fine (or double clicking etc)

  • I've not had the Page Of Bork yet today, how's the quote function coming along now?

  • Heh, forum just timed-out on me when I tried to open the spotted thread.

So, PoB is gone, underlying issue seems to still be with us.

  • They're the same error - just a change we made to CF config.

The timeouts are infrequent and unpredictable enough that they're very hard to reproduce. Every error gets logged though, and we've narrowed down the potential causes over the last day or so.

  • Thought that might be the case.

Will keep on breaking it then so you have more examples :)

  • Can you track/log when the same link is requested multiple times, i.e. when it's hanging on the first request?

  • The symptom is quite simple: some (less than 1%) of the requests from the frontend app to the API are timing out when reading from the socket. I've ruled out everything on the backend today, including the API itself.

Which still leaves a lot of possibilites, like the load balancer between API and frontend being mischievous, and/or poor error handling by the frontend client.

Oh, and everything is SSL so although I've tested the network between all the machines, I can't dump any traffic without a huge amount of hassle.

@Dammit we can see all the timeouts, and when someone closes the tab/hits refresh (as the server then can't send the response, even if it gets one).

  • Thanks for the "bottom menu"!

  • Fnar.

  • what?

  • have to say I preferred the previous menu at the bottom of the screen. Looked neater being in a line...
looked nicer on the phone as well, looks a bit more like a last minute addition now..

    my tuppence

  • I need a "doubletap" mouse button to navigate the forum these days.

  • I need a "doubletap" mouse button

Bolt one of these to your desktop

  • I preferred the previous menu at the bottom of the screen.

I have never seen a "previous" one!
Would prefer if it was basically the same whole "bar" that we have on top!

  • 404

  • Can't post anything. 404 bad request. Strangely can in this thread
