My logic is that age/injury will mean I have to give up riding fixed at some point, so I may as well grind up hills while I'm young, then I can spend my 50s being a lame roadie with a really nice bike, but having nowhere near as much fun.
Secretly this is my other reason, my left knee really gives me shit if I mash up hills - to the point where I'm in pain for a good few days afterwards...
Planet X also happen to do some pretty badass looking roadbikes, two birds - one stone
I see your point, kind of, but it's going to take a lot more money to get a road bike up to the spec that you'd want for covering long distances comfortably and also having something that looks flash. I say ride the Caminada until you feel you're mechnically limited by the speed/distance you can ride - if you consistently feel let down by not having gears then go for it, but I'd be surprised if you were.
