    *imagine a hub body that doesn't spin, with a spinning axle within.

  • There's no gap. Line runs through the static shell. Axle spins inside.

    The calipre mount is fixed to the shell. The rotor mount to the axle.

    The shell would have to be in 2 parts so I'm not sure how stiff that could be. The axle could be large diameter and stiff.

  • No an interface with the rotor mount/axle. Caged ball bearings or needle bearings. Like I say that couldn't be stiff – that would be down to the axle.

    I'm waiting on @mdcc_tester to arrive with an obvious reason this idea is junk.

    Inboard discs can be made to work in a cycle wheel, Honda put them on the VT500 (they were shit).

    They put the caliper mount inside the disc, like Buell but shrunk to hub size

    The trouble is, you still need a hub that's about the size of the brake rotor, so you don't really solve the aero issue, and you have to react the brake torque closer to the axle, making the bending moment on the end of the fork blade even more concentrated than it is with normal disc brakes.

    Update on disc brakes for road bike.

    I have ridden with mechanical and hybrid (HY/RD).

    What I can says is that organic pads is definitely a no-no, they have a sharper bites, which can produced judder, and they wear out really quickly after 1 week of touring, it took me about 700-800 miles before the pads wear halfway through (using Swissstop Organic and standard TRP).

    Now it got non-organic which have less of a bite, but reduced fork juddering a lots, and possibly longer lifespan.

  • Yup, doesn't take long to bed it in really, about 20 miles.

  • That'll be why they didn't last long and juddered, you didn't bed them in. You ought to do several hard stops from a good speed, get them up to a high temperature rapidly and they'll last a whole lot longer than that. Just going for a ride will not do it.

    Geometry

    An internal disc brake has the friction surface on the flat circular ends of a cylindrical rotor. A conventional hub brake has the friction surfaces on the curved walls of a cylinder. It's easier to maintain uniform pressure across the area of the friction pair if the interface is planar, which is why disc brakes consistently outperform drum brakes.
