Gear ratios for no brakes riding...

Getting back on track 49/18 is fine for me, seems to be a good all rounder for my puny guns. Skids are easy enough but I try and avoid it where possible.

Just joined the forum today guys ! Been cycling fixed gear for quite some time now and brakeless around Manchester and leeds and occasionally Berlin. I'm just looking for some info bout gear ratios and how to work them out, as I I would love to now the ratio I've been using . Cheers !

How do you know which ratio will before you?

It's impossible to now the ratio that'll before me.

Then how can you choose during that's right for you?

You choose no right to choose and just get rational.

47/17 gets me off

Nice one will give it a check out , been skidding for the past year now and never worked this ratio out !

I'm considering brakeless on my main commuter. It's a 46/17 and I have used a brake on it. I'm switching over to a new bigger and more fitting frame that will take all the parts and it's undrilled so I have three options.

Go Brakeless 46/17
Get a new fork and use a brake with 46/17
Change cog to 46/19 and go brakeless

I currently ride brakeless with a 51/19 and that's great. I'm just thinking the 46/17 might make for a more cautious and less enjoyable ride.

Just wondered what people's experiences were and a bit of advice would be great.

48/19 is best for brakless. Tried and tested.

i thought it was 44/16

Nah. Smaller cogs means they'll wear quicker. Also 48/19 gives good skid patch distribution. Something about even on the front, odd on the back. This is going back a few years mind, when brakless was cool.

'No brakes' will make for a more cautious ride, or if not, a fairly short one.

have you tried, initially at least,not using your current brake, you'll feel so much more a part of the bike.
