  • Brixton Health Foods staff are not friendly. The people behind the till sit in judgement on the customers. Not sure what the attitude problem is, but it's a relief when they are civil.

  • Aha, that healthier-than-thou attitude, who needs it?

    So glad you said this.

  • Sadly I find this weirdness/attitude in lots of whole/health food shops which makes me want to buy online (Ocado does nutritional yeast, amongst other niche things).

Whereas the people at Daniel & Sons ^^^^ couldn't have been nicer.

  • Hmmm - did the forum switchover delete some juicy morsels? Or did I kill another thread?

Anyway! The teachers at work today were joking about the fact that since the school switched from veggie to optional omnivore meals, there's been a lot more biting going on between the boys. That made me smile.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that there is a correlation between aggression and diet.

EDIT: So I Googled it which returned predictably evangelical results as well as some horrible anti-vegan sites, so I'm none the wiser :/ #csb

  • There's been very little action on this thread recently. It's possible all of it was during the migration and has been lost. All I know is that if I click on your csb link, some bug in the forum will log me out.

Had some cavolo nero in this week's veg box and tried this salad recipe, substituting pine nuts (ground along with the garlic in the mortar) for the pecorino. Worked well.

  • Long shot, but to any vegetarians/vegans fancy a 2.5kg bag of Soy Protein Isolate?

It's the Unflavoured 2.5kg pouch from here http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/soy-protein-isolate/10529701.html

Had a few servings out of it but just not getting along with it so switching back to Whey.

    £10 anyone?

PS. I bought it because it's cheap. Lesson learned - don't experiment with massive pouches.

  • ^ No thanks! I never been able to get past the "OMG - I'm going to gag" stage with these.

Is anyone on here planning to attend VegFest in September?

    http://www.london.vegfest.co.uk/programme

    BOGOF tickets...

"The Vegan Society – guests of honour

2014 marks the Vegan Society's 70th birthday, and at VegfestUK London we'll be giving them our full support. Over the past 70 years, the Society has promoted veganism far and wide and made the vegan lifestyle accessible to the public through their trademarks, education materials and merchandise. At our London show, the Society will organise collections on exit, as well as hosting a number of interesting talks and demos, and displaying plenty of useful info and attractive merchandise at their stall downstairs...."

  • My cousin is working in London for the next few weeks. He is vegan and gluten free.
He is planning to take me out for dinner whilst here.

I've isolated Rasa and Mestizo as good places to eat. Please, are there any other suggestions which are fairly central or East?

Oh and @Miss_Mouse, I'd be happy to go with you. x

  • ^ Good choices :)

Do you think he'd stretch to Vanilla Black prices? ;)

Also Food for Thought is fun and very central.

Anyone want this for free? It's going in the bin when my replacement whey protein arrives. I've got used to the taste of it, it's just a bit hard work (kind of porridgy) to drink and I'd much prefer the whey version. There's still over 1.5kg left.

  • Ice bucket challenge supports charities on Animal Aid blacklist. Dont do it or support it.

  • Or, when nominating people, explain your terms and ask them to suppor the charities that you do support? I mean, I dislike Ice Bucket Challenge because I'm an elitist snob, which will never persuade anybody of anything. There are probably better ways to engage. Over to you.

  • Or don't do it because it's your business what charities you support and how you do it.

Anyway, bad news everybody - Amico Bio Holborn has closed its pizza oven - it was too expensive to run and they weren't selling enough pizzas. I went specifically the other night as I was craving my first pizza since veganising 18mths ago, so a bummer*. Any suggestions for a decent pizza place?

*the manager gave us a free dessert in sympathy - top marks.

  • Franco Manca do vegan.

  • Voodoo Rays in Dalston do some pretty amazing vegan pizza slices.

  • So, some clever clogs has decided to use gelatine for food labelling. The article doesn't say, but I don't get the impression that it's agar agar she's talking about, so I guess that we can only hope it won't be used for food that vegans would buy. Either way, more use for gelatine, not great.

    http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/18/bioreactive-bump-gelatine-food-sell-by-date-wins-james-dyson-award

  • They're talking about using it mainly for meat and dairy, so shouldn't cause us too many problems. Appreciate the point about increased use of gelatine, but if it results in less meat being discarded, it could be better in the long run.

  • Seems like all kinds of poor thinking.

Best before and sell-by dates have been strongly criticised for being inaccurate – leading to perfectly fresh food being binned. In fact, these labels are often used for retailers' quality control, while the key information for consumers, for food safety reasons, is the use-by date.

So remove the useless and misleading (to the customer) information from the customer's sight. Put it in some kind of machine-readable form, for example.

And the gelatine can be adapted to match the expiry period of the food by altering the concentration. The higher the concentration, the longer the gel will stay solid.

Um, no. Even if they get the calibration right, the goods are inside a sealed container, while the gelatine is on the outside. In a typical consumer's home, jars and tins will be exposed to changes in heat and moisture and the acid sweat of the consumer's hands. The container largely protects the contents - but not the label. The label is likely to degrade at an unpredictable rate.

Not sure that labels which are designed to rot are contributing much to food hygiene.

  • I'm sure this will get an easy 'yes' from Bruce, but anyone else up for trying this out?

    http://fatgayvegan.com/2014/09/20/vegan-venture/#more-4438

It'll be there until the 12th October.

  • I'm sure this will get an easy 'yes' from Bruce

Would be offended. But, in all honesty, can't complain.

  • I just thought the combination of vegan + food + Mexican + Bruce would shorten the odds ever so slightly. :)

But it doesn't look as if there's any great enthusiasm from anyone else?

  • I went on Sunday, was pretty good, well worth a visit.
