Cheers, I was looking for the same (although it only syncs 30 days in advance).
Those android sticks that you plug into your tv, can anyone recommend one? Cheers.

Any up-t0-date budget phone tips? Smashed my Nexus 4 (and my elbow) falling off.
4G Moto G for £149 seems reasonable, I know quite a few people with the 3G version who are happy.
The features of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact appeal (battery life, smaller screen, waterproof) appeal but the price and glass front and back don't...

New phones are a few months away in the pre-Christmas launch season.
So you've got a pretty good selection of existing phones that are being reduced in price or having the price frozen in the next month or two.
The Moto G (3G) remains a damn fine phone, but once you taste 4G goodness it's hard to not want it (especially as Three UK make it the same price as 3G). The Moto G 4G is probably the best value smart phone right now. Yes it's not as fast as the Nexus 5, but at half the price it's incredible bang for buck.
I'd shoot for the Moto G 4G.

Spent 3 weeks on the road with my friend who has an iPhone 5s. The camera on that compared to my Nexus 4 is next level. Which Android phone can stop me buying an iPhone 6 just for the camera?
I think I've spent the last 5 years telling myself I don't need a good phone camera because I have a real camera, but I've just been kidding myself. I don't own a point and shoot and based on the results the iPhone 5s produced, I shouldn't need one...!

In all honesty the cameras on Android phones, and accompanying camera apps, are just not equal to the iPhone 5.
The best out there are the Sony Xperia Z2, and the Samsung Galaxy S5.
But... the Samsung feels cheap and you have to put up with the raft of crappy changes made it Android, so all that money on a quality bit of hardware is tainted by their software.
The Sony on the other hand looks great, has a fantastic camera sensor (which beats the iPhone 5 by some margin).
The only problems with the Sony are:
- That's one impressive price tag
- I don't know anyone with one to vouch for the real world experience matching the specs
If you can try a Sony, do. Otherwise the iPhone is the best camera if the camera and photo apps is a really high priority.
There's a long review of the Z2 here: http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/21/5630502/sony-xperia-z2-and-z2-tablet-review

My brother in law has the Z1 and my sister just had the Z1 Compact delivered and they're both trying to stop me getting an iPhone to get the Z2. My main feelings on that are that it's huge, and like that review confirms, despite the big Sony sensor, the camera is still pretty hit and miss.
Hmmm.

It all depends on what you want.
I find the camera on my Nexus 5 to be adequate, and because photography on the phone isn't my primary thing (email, calendar, web browsing and news apps are) I chose to compromise the camera.
If you're happy with putting photography first and compromising everything else to fit into Apple's world, then yes the iPhone is the business.
But I'm of the opinion that it's all about the optics and phone optics will never be great (you cannot shrink glass, and software can only do so much). So I'd rather (and have) invest in a point and shoot that I do carry everywhere.
My real problem was that I never used my DSLR camera.
The solution wasn't a better phone, the real solution was a point and click with a great sensor and a phenomenal prime lens, that was small enough to be carried everywhere.
So I bought one of these a few years ago: http://www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/slrs/panasonic_dmcgx1 with a really low f1.4 prime lens. It's freaking awesome, and I do have it on me almost every day.
They've got a new version of that which is even smaller and more like a classic reporter's camera: http://www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/slrs/panasonic_dmcgm1
Oh, and that newer one has WiFi, etc... so the picture sharing bit is solved too.
If I were in your place today, I'd be looking at solving the camera problem rather than compromising how I use a smart phone +90% of the time.

Someone on the Digital photography thread was selling a Fuji XF1 if that's the way you're looking.
The Nokia Lumias seem to be accepted as the best cameraphones, although obviously still not android. In Android the LG G2 and G3 seem to get the best reviews (I've never used them).
The Nexus 5 is OK in HDR mode, these were both taken with it recently

Was in Currys on Oxford St at lunchtime, sign on the counter offering chromecast for £20.
Checked the website and it's the same there too. Also applies to PC World, obvsly.

^ if you haven't got a chromecast and you've got a spare HDMI port on your TV, just get one. You'll love it.

Was just coming here to ask a Moto G V Nexus question so this is very handy! Would you take the Moto G (3g) over a Nexus 4 if prices were similar?
-
• #15043
I'd take neither, 4G is just too damn nice and my primary usage isn't photography it's data+communication. Even if it was photography, wouldn't you like 4G to share them faster?
I'd take the Moto G 4G.
-
• #15044
Do you have 4G on the N5?
-
• #15045
Yeah, on Three UK for £15 per month, unlimited 4G.
I've done around 5GB per month on it at worst, but usually around 1.5GB as I like to keep my battery life in the silly range (36 hours at least).
-
• #15046
Thanks. Moto 4G also fits the 'can be delivered quickly' requirement so I've got one coming tonight.
-
• #15047
Plus I'm on Three too so that works.

My boyfriend and a few friends have the Moto G, I had the Nexus (till I smashed it).
The battery life is definitely better on the Moto G, and the digitizer is part of the glass on the Nexus so if the display cracks at all - even a tiny bit - the touch screen stops working.
Whereas my friend has smashed the glass to smithereens on his Moto G and the phone still works fine.

I get what you're saying, but I don't really want another camera. I'm kind of embracing having all things in one, and then the 60D (soon to be a 5D MK3) when I really want to take a proper photo. I just want my everyday snaps to not be shit in anything other than perfect light conditions, and to be able to do a tonne of decent post on the phone. If it sounds like I've already made up my mind it's because I think I have. Unless someone comes along and says here's a new Nexus - or other Android phone that ships with Vanilla rom - with an iPhone matching (or even beating!) camera and software.

Not bothered about photography either but I don't know if I can get 4g on the payg tariff I use and I don;t want to change as it suits my pocket at teh moment. Will have a trawl of the EE site.
