as someone who's got a motley collection of tattoos from artists whose work i like (and don't necessarily fit well with each other), i'm more of the school of thought that i will go to an artist to draw up a design in their style, rather than (like sumo said) treat them as a bit of a vending machine to just smash out exactly what i want based on a design i already have. i'm not against it, it just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me because it's not really the reason i get tattooed.
@owl those designs are lovely and if your friend is happy to build up their confidence using 3rl or 1rl needles (super fine) they could transpose really well and keep the more delicate notes. sarah carter (nee schor) is a fine art graduate and has a background in illustration, and her work's great if you're into greyscale though her portrait style is quite specific. a couple of examples:
my friend alex is also an illustrator by trade and started tattooing a couple of years ago but i can't find any pictures - both my housemate and i have been tattooed by him and it's a totally different approach as illustrators have such different technique (read: lighter touch) than most new school/heavy linework tattoo artists! anyway - my advice is, if your friend wants to do it they should go for it
