My last pair of cleats lasted about a year of a mix of commuting, track and fixie skidding. The C spring didn't snap and I didn't give them any kind of maintenance, had to saw the bolts out though as I didn't use cleat covers either.
Now I have just put on a new pair and have keep on kovers, so much nicer. Comtat Cycles near Old Street sells them so you don't have to trek down to Putney.
