That has freaked me out all day, but I've finally got to the bottom of it... he'd submitted the comment multiple times (possibly via mobile where the lag might defeat the anti-dupe code), and it resulted in 4 copies in the database at these times:
'2014-08-18 06:01:23.477836' '2014-08-18 06:03:08.621653' '2014-08-18 06:03:26.217209' '2014-08-18 06:05:21.009638'
Each one was counted as a new update, and thus appeared in your Following screen multiple times.
I'm going to suppress that when it happens.

shitty that it should take so much time, but I guess in perfecting microcosm it's the small things that take most of the work to solve

Incredible to think what we've built in the last year, but also hard to see how much work needs doing when small edge cases appear like this.
