• How do you delete your own posts?

  • You can't at the moment, but just edit them down to a dot.

  • How can you report a post?

  • Just send me a PM and include a link to the post.

  • Why do some user profiles appear in the Today view?

  • The Today view shows anything that was modified today.

    That includes:

    • New conversations
    • Updates to existing conversations
    • New events
    • Updates to existing events
    • New messages
    • Updated to existing messages
    • Newly registered profiles
    • Updated profiles

I didn't include forums themselves, as then the list would just be full of the forums most frequently updated.

  • How do I copy this list http://www.lfgss.com/comments/10107771/ with the hyperlinks?

As far as I know, there's no easy way to do this yet. I made a little tool to help with it a bit, but then deleted it because the boss didn't like the idea.

  • This is a bad idea. Do not do this.

The value of the Markdown field is untrusted.

The Markdown can easily contain XSS. Whilst you could never put this on a site as we'd process it out... having one user access the raw Markdown of another does create the risk that the user who is using your tool will now be susceptible to any XSS attack put into the Markdown.

The raw Markdown is only ever supposed to be accessed by the person who made it. You may have just forced me to changed the API such that you cannot get the raw Markdown if you are not authenticated as the person who wrote it.

Yes, that's why my tool escaped all the <, and why HTML posts won't work in it.

    Not my intention, tool deleted.

  • Yes, that's why my tool escaped all the <, and why HTML posts won't work in it.

The problem with XSS is that just escaping < isn't enough to defeat it.

But... you can actually trust the HTML we output. If you had used that, I'd embrace the tool and would wonder how to integrate it.

If we had a "HTML to equivalent Markdown" tool, then you could trust the HTML and get back to easily readable and editable Markdown. Something like https://github.com/kates/html2markdown .

That would be good as then we'd have the basis for allowing quoting in a way that was similar to the old way.

But whatever the solution is, you just can't trust the original user Markdown.

  • I was really enjoying the new forum but safari not directing me to the first unread posts on iphone and ipad was starting to really piss me off.

Installed chrome on both devices and it has stopped the need for pointless scrolling.

Huge improvement, would suggest it to anyone using an apple device.

  • James, there are/were also some security advantages for using chrome on iOS, as it defeated some attack (aliens?). That's about as much as I bothered to try and understand.

  • Oh man, that is such an improvement. Have some imaginary rep.

  • I posted last week about posts appearing like this:

Is this going to be looked at? As it is, I'm finding the forum unusable.

  • That is fairly unusable.

Could you fill in a support details request for me so that I can see what the browser details are:
    http://supportdetails.com/?recipient=david@buro9.com

  • Okay, have done so. This isn't my normal work PC but it happens on that one too.

Another thing, in my Following list I could see you had replied to me but when I clicked on the link it said that it couldn't be found. I had to find the thread manually.

I have just fixed that one.

Cool. I've got a Windows 7 machine running the same version of Windows, so I'll see if I can get Chrome to be the same version so I can test.

  • @hats , are there specific pages on which it is more likely to happen?

I'm now using Chrome on Windows 7 and I cannot reproduce the bug.

  • No, it seems quite random. It'll be a few posts per page, then when I refresh it it goes back to normal, but then the next page the same. Then when I look at the thread later it'll be fine, but another thread will be borked.

    I'm on chrome version 36.0.1985.143 m.

Is there anything I can do to give you more info?

  • Is there anything I can do to give you more info?

Nope, the support details page already gave me the precise version numbers.

I have the same setup now, and it's working fine.

Unfortunately the only likely difference is Windows... as it's possible (and usual) in workplaces for Windows to be configured centrally. You wouldn't be able to find out how they've configured it, and it would be hard for me to guess or replicate it.

But I'll spend the afternoon working in Chrome 36 on Win 7 and see if it happens at any point

What's the current encoding setting? It's unlikely it's having an effect, but worth knowing what it is.

It looks like quite a few people are having this or a similar issue with chrome. Not that that fixes the problem: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=108645

  • Knowing our ICT department, they've probably fucked something up. They're rolling Win7 out across the organisation at the moment and making a terrible hash of it.

Thanks for looking into it anyway.

  • I have Chrome set to resume where I left off (which may have been the cause of what just happened).

When viewing the forum for the first time today, its appearance had stretched to fill the entire screen, rather than it being as narrow as it is now and has always appeared to me since migration. As soon as I selected a menu it shrank back, so its appearance I saw and liked very much may just have been a glitch with Chrome picking up an open tab for the first time in a browsing session (similar happens with other websites). I don't see any means to adjust the view so am putting this down to a quirk, but having now seen how threads appear when filling almost the entire screen in landscape, I prefer it to the restrictive grey panels either side of a thread's content.

Can I adjust this myself? No doubt this has already been covered but I've not been paying attention.
