Ride London 100

  • No hard feelings taken. My original post was a comment on another post that observed that some of the later starters had to put up with the inclement weather for a greater proportion of their ride. My neighbour, for example, started an hour earlier than me and finished in 4 hours 20. My riding time was 5 hours 10: he's a stronger rider than me for sure, but not that much stronger.
But my point was: I could handle the first hour of drizzle, and I can certainly cope with cold temperatures. But how often does anyone face conditions like that? I entered this thing to test my strength on a bike, not my ability to ride in a hurricane.
And it's no good alluding to what Wiggins has to put up with; he's a pro-cyclist and I'm a mere hobbyist. I do it for fun, not to compete.

  • Admittedly my label fell off

    two cable ties failed?

  • I think he means the helmet sticker.

  • This is London's my friend...

  • Stupid question but am I right in think if a group of us all got in via the ballot that doesn't mean we could all be starting at the same time or even in the same start wave, colour? Just have to meet up on the course somewhere.

  • unless you enter as a team?
although you may need to be BC and club subs paid for that.

  • You'd need to all choose the same estimated finish times

  • Ballot opens on Monday.

    Too soon for a list...?

  • Went out for a long ride on Sunday (180km) found the headwind hard going. Completely threw my fueling.. as I was going so slowly and not sweating, I just kept to my standard mouthful of coconut every hour.

Completely bonked on the return home when the tail wind allowed me to stretch my legs.
Any tips for calculating how much energy your burning, if a.) you don't have a power meter & b.) weather conditions mean speed is a poor indicator?

My plan at the moment is always carry a couple of ride shots in my pocket incase of emergency.

  • That's why I got a heart rate monitor - to be able to track how much I'm burning. Handy for trying to lose a few pounds also.

  • It doesn't matter how much your burning. It will be more than your body can absorb in the same given time. That's why you eat/drink your 70g* of carbs per hour - pretty much whatever riding you're doing.

*depends on body how trained the individual is but we're talking 30g range. This is all the body can deal with.

  • I just kept to my standard mouthful of coconut every hour.

    Woefully inadequate ride fuel...

  • Blockquote found the headwind hard going. Completely threw my fueling.. as I was going so slowly and not sweating,

A headwind will strip the moisture out of you without you noticing so much. You still need to work on replenishing the fluids.

  • You want very easily digestible fuel sources, so bars and whole food is a no (less desirable). When you're on a 180k ride, the last thing your body wants to do is digest solid food.

Carb powders and gels with water are yes. I'd check tolerances with gels first TORQ are nice from memory.

  • Clearly you have never ridden an audax. Beans on toast and a nice piece of cake is far more preferable and far more frequently consumed than powders and gels.

  • That's a subject with it's own thread. There are different ways to get your carbs.

  • I would agree with that, I don't do gels or powders etc whatsoever. Dried fruit, nuts etc and proper food is far better for me on 200k's

  • Bit hard to cook and eat beans on toast on a non-stop ride though.

The pros seem to get buy with solid food along with gels and (one would assume) bottles with energy drink so I wouldn't dismiss the notion of some solid food.

  • You need some solid food to give you satiety yes, granted. But my point being is that you won't be able to digest and utilise "beans and toast" for energy faster than a carb powder / gel. I make my own carb drinks as its very easy.

I have no interest in riding Audax.

You certainly won't see any pro triathletes eating eccles cake.

  • Nutrition thread >>>

  • Entry total apparently going up to 35k next year. That's a lot of people.

  • Confirmed: http://road.cc/content/news/127172-bigger-field-2015-ridelondon-100-make-it-europes-biggest-sportive

More likely to get a place. More likely to be held up if you guesstimate your time incorrectly.
