  • I'm looking for a way to change the chainline on cranks for GXP bottom brackets.
    More specific: I bought a Sram S300 crankset. It has a 41mm chainline. Since the chainring mounts on the inside and I am adding a thicker chainring I expect the chainline to drop to somewhere around 40mm.
    I'd like to push that 1.5 mm outwards to get back into a more acceptable region.
    I know you can shim the BB to affect the chainline, but I thought that was only possible for 73mm wide GXP BBs on 68mm wide BB-shells.

    So how does this work?

  • Any suggestions for Firefox offshoots?

    Something along the lines of Palemoon or Seamonkey (but not either of those). Preferably something that can run in portable mode.

  • Inverse shim or get a CNC machinist to cut 1.5mm recesses into your thicker chainring.

  • That could work. The chainring already has small recesses for the chainring bolts on one side. If I could have these widened to accept the spider I think I'll be good.
    It's a Gebhardt GXP Chainring.

    Edit: Or I could just get another crankset without chainring that has a proper chainline. Anyone know of a GXP/Hollowtech Crankset with 130mm BCD and 165mm length that has a proper 42mm chainline? I know of the Shimano Alfine crankset, but sadly it's not availible in 165mm

  • So, after switching the tubes on my wheels I think the rear cone bearings have developed play.
    I can wiggle the rear wheel from side to side while the axle is correctly fixed.
    I do have a cone spanner, so how would I go and tighten this back up?
    I think it is the left cone, as it is hidden by the freewheel. I tried the right cone (next to the fixed sprocket), it seems to be tight.

  • I am starting to look at tents to use in Patagonia. Initially I wanted a cheap tent that wasn't 'too' heavy. But after doing a bit of reading people seem to say that you * need * a 3 season tent. Once I start looking at 3s tents irispective of weight the prices seem to jump.

    How much of this is boys just going overboard with kit?

    We would probably be using it for about 1-2 months on and off.

    Also for anyone who has been to Patagonia, is buying a tent actually a good idea or is it easier to stay in cabins etc, and just rent a tent every now and then?

    I'm keeping an eye out on the Thorntree sales threads for anyone selling their kit. Anyone got any other tips of for where to buy second hand kit in South America?

  • There are plenty of cabins, haciendas, ranches etc., across Patagonia and the very weak Argentinian currency should make them affordable (depending on you budget of course). There is however nothing better than camping and I would definitely recommend it... That being said those who recommend a 3 seasons tent do not lie. Weather systems across Patagonia are very unpredictable as they are anywhere with high mountains, lots of water and large plains.... if you can afford a 3 season tent you will be able to minimize other bulky warm weather items like sleeping bag rolls (depending on tent) and the thickest bags... If you plan to camp in the future its a good investment.

  • Any interest in Teak on forum? All FEQ standard (ie 'eco') from sustainable plantations. Long and wide, matched logs, cross, vertical or mixed grain. And levels of quality for the maritime business all the way through to furniture, floor boards and decking.

    You could trial the new chainring on the outer-side of the spider and stick a spacer behing the rear sprocket.
