Never been a problem for me in 3 years or so... I've accidentally unscrewed valve cores, but never with the pump...
-

Did yours have the ABS button though, Ed?
It does, bear in mind I got a bit of a surprise when trying to unscrew the pump from the valve only for it to unscrew the valve core as well a couple weeks ago, so need some practicing to ensure it won't happen again (and yes I got the ABS button).
Schwalbe valve core are surprisingly easy to unscrew.

Put some threadlock on it? Bugger when you want to remove it, but doable and still easy to remove pump.

My track pump once did this the bang was incredible. I now tighten my valve cores with pliers, hasn't been an issue since.
Got a Lezyne Road pump (silver) with long body last week, stunningly made & pumps well even at higher pressures, It packs away very tidily. mount is very slim so fits along side cages snugly and I am yet to find a way to catch it with foot.
In all I would recommend to anyone.

I decided to err on the side of caution* by getting the Topeak RaceRocket HP, it take a little longer to inflate but no longer worry about the valve coming off easily.
Surprisingly as well made as a Lezyne it have to be said.

Opinions on these, please, if anyone has them...
Topeak Pocket Rocket DX II Mini Pump - Not the smallest but it gets good reviews: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/topeak-topeak-pocket-rocket-dx-ii-mini-pump-prod25103/
Topeak Micro Rocket AL Pump - IS the smallest, but apparently it's hard work: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-micro-rocket-al-pump/
Syncros HP Micro Pump (2013) - I can find next to no information on this one, but sized in-between the two: http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/syncros-hp-micro-pump-2013-p208558?gclid=CPKZ59_C2L8CFTMftAodPS4A8Q
I'm fed up with using cartridges and want something small but workable.

Personally I'd never go for a pump without a hose (can't remember the proper name) so wouldn't buy any of the above.
You'll find a lot of recommendations for Lezyne in this thread. Their Pressure Drive Mini ABS fits in a jersey pocket.

Thanks for the advice, but that ain't a very pretty pump.
Has* nobody* got any of these?

Christ, look at this:

What I hoped to be a very simple thing is suddenly getting complicated...

Surely you want your pump to be functional not pretty?
-
• #637
I've had my Topeak Pocket Rocket for 5-6 years now and it still works perfectly. Obviously it doesn't get used as often as my track pump though. I can only assume the DX II is of the same or better quality?

Ideally, I'd like it to be both.
Actually, that Poco one doesn't get very good reviews, and nor does the Topeak Micro Rocket AL Pump particularly.
The Topeak Pocket Rocket DX II Mini Pump, on the other hand, receives very good write-ups, although being significantly bigger than those others maybe it should? And it looks a bit like a Model 24 'stick' grenade, which can only be a good thing: -

Topeak RaceRocket HP would be a better choice than the Micro Rocket AL Pump.

Yeah, I think the consensus is 'avoid the Micro Rocket' and go for either the Race Rocket or the Pocket Rocket DX - they both appear to have a bit more umph. My penchant for World War 2 hardware may very well dictate which of the two I go for.
Thanks for the input, guys!

TL;DR
I need a portable pump that actually works and can pump up 80psi+ without having to pump for 30 minutes...
-
• #642
Lezyne : http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lezyne-road-drive-mini-abs-pump/ best mini pump I have ever owned. Only pump I have of comparable quality is my shock pump.
But if you have removable valve cores you need to tighten them with pliers before you use the pump for the first time
-
• #643
The dirt cheap Phaart mini pump from PlanetX gives you that with ease.
-
• #644
Or if you get really sick of it, threadlock them in
-
• #645
TBH I only get it is the valve is new, once I have tightened it it has never worked loose. touch wood!

Get a CO2 pump.

Came across this pretty nice idea for a CO2 pump that utilises the space in Shimano Hollowtech II cranks;

CO2 is for triathletes. Real Men™ use their arms.

topeak morph turbo
Yes. That.
