Yeah I fancy the stubbie extensions of an H bar. I have a cheap Humpert version of the Mary which I've used on a couple of bikes to good effect but I fancy something with a few more hand positions now. I did think about putting the Mary-esque bar I have on and using bar tape instead of grips and running it all the way into the stem do I might try that but those ones on rosebike are almost too cheap to miss.

Any owners of the Minoura Porteur rack here? Looking to fit one to a mountain bike but it looks like the struts are not adjustable in any way and I don't fancy mounting it too high. Could you measure them?
-
• #7529
They are not adjustable at all. I have mine on a 29er with plenty of room.
I could measure tomorrow if needed -

That is not a pretty bike
-
• #7531
In which case it sounds like it'll be much too high with 26" wheels.

Vertical measurement from center of mounting hole to underside of rack bed is 390mm subtract 8 for mounting nuts and washers.

That's a re post.
Allthough it'a a rear post. -

Yup, rider's blog post about his equipment is here: http://allegaertk.wordpress.com/2014/07/29/bike-set-up-transcontinentalrace-2014/
He's sponsored by Jaegher and Campagnolo.

thanks.
do aerobars relieve the back for longer distance riding? is that the purpose as much as the aero benefit?
i'm doing a 5 day beast soon. on my 7 day beast last year my back was the biggest source of discomfort. not sure if i should try for areobars or not...

I think it might be just to get one more position, also you can rest your hands on tt bars. Could be useful to have when riding 500km every day...
-
• #7540
Yes, I think a lot of long distance/endurance riders use aerobars for comfort reasons. Scott-of-BRP's custom English had aerobars for that reason.

Even Mike Hall went for aero bars on his 29er... well sort of...
I’ve added some micro bar ends into the middle and taped them up. Last time I used some stubby clip on aero bars but I found by the end that I couldn’t get low enough on them for any length of time and it was actually as quick to just hold the bars right by the stem. With the centre of the bars taped I have more hand positions and can rest my elbows against the taped bar ends with my hands on my front bag if I want to get lower, and the whole arrangement is lighter, which is important for the 200,000ft of climbing ahead.

I'd look at the saddle first thing (as well as position), it's best to rule out the cause first before resorting to an aerobars.
A different saddle shape/position can make a big difference, I've seen customer whose back are arched to the point that they bear a resemblance to a beetle pushing a dung, putting him in a saddle with a cut-out actually help him to relaxed more and able to have a straighter back because his undercarriage isn't squashed up, this is just one example.
Sort saddle position out first, then concentrate on bar set-up.

saddle is all good, have had bike fit.
the drop is a little severe in absolute terms, but my back angle is a perfectly comfortable 42 deg when riding at low effort. i'm fortunate enough to be flexible in the hips, pelvis and back and don't raise my shoulders - unless being battered by a headwind.anyone had experience doing 250-300km at 25-30kmph with and without aerobars?

I love that.

Have been spending far too much time thinking about frame swap to a Straggler. Had almost turned myself off the idea before seeing that...
-
• #7550
Straggler is perfect.
My question would be why not something like on-one mary then? Or do you want to have little stubbies resembling h-bar? I would guess that they could become more flexy if you hacksaw them, but i dont think they're gonna fall apart.
