  • So. I reinstalled the game and made a new character. So far so good.
Now I'm somewhere out in the wild, can't carry stuff, because my pants cant hold all of it (seems reasonable) and I have no idea where I am.
If I open the map I only get a black screen. Is this a bug, or do I have to find an actual map first, or something?

Oh and it seems I have eaten rotten fruit. Time to start a new character...

  • Ha. You don't get a map. It'll take you a while to get your bearings and work out what to do.
Stay the fuck away from zombies and get hunting for food and weapons.

  • You do get a map, you just (as you correctly guessed) have to find it first. It comes in pieces (north east, south etc). The issue is that by the time you have found them all you'll probably know most of the land blindfolded. The map also takes up loads of space in your inventory. If you have a second screen - e.g. a monitor plugged into the laptop like I'm using, or a tablet then check out http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus. It's a good map that gets quickly updated (they've inserted the villages/ airfields etc that have been added/changed since the last patch). Rotten fruit isn't always a death sentence - at least if you can find charcoal tablets to consume, then you should heal up nicely. You can commonly find them in medkits or in GPs/med centres/med tents/hospitals etc. (Hospitals - big buildings with two wings and four or five floors in large settlements, the front of the building is broken glass windows, the back is brick with ladders up to the roof. Med center - large single floor building, usually wooden, kind of blue painted. Found in large towns on the outskirts. Med tent - small green tent found in military bases. GP looks like:

This is a great resource and will save a lot of time looking in empty buildings:

  • Stay away from anyone carrying a gun.

  • Good tips @CYOA
Yeah, I never bothered collecting the maps, you'll never end up with the part you need and they are a waste of space.
As you find food eat it, all of it, and drink everything, until you reach "healthy" and "energised". From there you will be able to heal yourself if you take damage.
Not everyone with a gun is bad... I actually find it worse when I am the one kitted out and some guy appears with no more than pants a cycle helmet and nothing to lose...

  • If you don't have a second screen you can use the web browser in Steam to open the map so you dont have to alt tab out of the game, you can just bring up the steam overlay and check the map that way. I have found that any time alt tabbed out of the game can be dangerous, even in cover!

  • That's smart. Will do.

@chrisbmx116 I didn't know there was such a thing as "healthy" and "energized". Do they show up in the same spot as "cold", "hungry", "bleeding" et al?

    @CYOA Good tips, thanks.

  • @Murphys_Law Yep. Obvs you are not doing too well if you are only seeing those alerts... ha.
Once you are healthy you can take more damage and recover from things more... tear up as many t shirts as you can and have them at the ready.
I recently took a beating from 4 zombies, inc 2 of those leap frog little shits, managed to out run them, things were going low saturation and my leg was in pain... some bandages, a splint and a few tins of tuna later I was healing then next check back to healthy.
If it rains Sunday I will prob be on so we could arrange a meet... the 6 man crack team was fucking awesome.

  • There's a map app available for ipad, iZurvive, pretty helpful. There seems to be more zombies since the path finding update and they appear tougher to kill? I rinsed an ammo box full of ak rounds last night in the space of around half an hour and had to bandage 3 or 4 times. This was just outside cherno.
I generally play with a mate on quietish servers, got loads of gear and been alive for some time. As a result I'm fairly nervous about full servers, I could do with dying to lift the loot burden. Are people here using teamspeak? I don't know how that works, we just use steam voice chat at the moment

  • @fettled_nuts same here... when I died recently it was almost a burden lifted. Miss my 4 guns and Ammo box though.
Its fun playing on full servers but can be harsh too, bumping into 2 folks yesterday was good, I had the upper hand as I was armed up but they turned out to be cool, even ended up arming one of them and he didnt shoot me in the back of the head which was nice...
    Roll on a wet sunday...

  • I hate this game solo, a team would be so good

  • I am constantly on edge when playing alone. There seems to be quite a few of us now to team up, what are everybody's steam names?
    Mine is dr.dvice

  • _ cyoa _ (but without the spaces before the C and after the A. Microcosm italicizes it without the space to just 'cyoa' )

  • Mine is shrrgnien42 . Looking forward to some fashionable looting. :)

  • Shit. Had a really really good run and then was shot down by some bloke I ran into in a house. Meh.

  • I have no PC to play this on but I've recently been playing this with @spotter at his place (hi @CYOA).
I think I'm going to build a rig so I can get involved myself!

  • Do it. I'm in town at the end of the month. LAN PARTY!

  • How much would a decentish gaming rig cost to build?
I can't face buying a PC but if I were to build a high powered gaming one/server and hid it in a cupboard then streamed to my Mac...
Or built a small one in those mini MacPro case copies?

Could you do a quick run down of the parts you plan on using?

Could you do a quick run down of the parts you plan on using?

I don't have any experience with building gaming rigs but from research and recommendations I gather £500 should do it. This would get you a decent i3 CPU with a dedicated graphics card, 8gb ram and an SSD which I'm led to believe should be more than enough for this game and perfectly adequate for many others.

Below is the spec I'm looking at right now.

  • Currently loitering in a gate house on the southwestern border of the NW airfield. Fairly well kitted out so will wait for a LFGSS crew get-together to log back on. Am busy tomorrow but free maybe Monday or Tuesday night?

  • @CYOA I will free up one of those eves.

  • Monday night = Polo night.
    Tuesday maybe?
