I doubt you need a HID, I suspect the light you have is good ole tungsten and an upgrade to halogen is simple cheap and effective. If you are riding at night and outpacing a halogen light perhaps the reflector is corroded, or the lens is fogged or just dirty, or even angled too low.
HID is great but you need to be comfortable with fairly complex wiring and finding mountings for the ballast and relays. It is great especially on high powered bikes ridden fast in the dark.
