I used a fairfx.com $ card* in chicago. there was only one place I couldn't use it which was out in the sticks on an old dial up modem sounding standalone atm which didn't like our debit cards either.
i think they work well and you can withdraw cash on them quite easily if you prefer to carry cash
*two actually. I had a second backup card on the same account with about $100 on it that i kept with my passport, as they can transfer the balance between cards over the phone in an emergency so was covered in case i had my main one stolen or I lost it somehow.
