The Intel Pentium G3258 is the new bargain processor (available for under £50). It's an unlocked 3.2Ghz that can be overclocked to 4.8Ghz and even though it's only 2 core, it can rival much more expensive cpu's.

so i got fed up and decided a full re install was needed last night.
Now its not even letting me into windows. Boot up bar, then blank.

Your MBR is probably toast.
Recent versions of windows don't like to be installed onto discs with preexistence operating systems.
You could try installing onto a clean disc - no partitions, no data.
If you want to install Ubuntu onto it, you're going to have to mess around with the grub2 bootloader.
Or just install Ubuntu, and run windows as a virtual machine, should you ever need it.

Install Ubuntu.
How do you want to use a VPN?
-
• #1520
Do you even?
-
• #1521
Do you want to tunnel from or to the machine? Does it need to act as server or client?
-
• #1522
both... i guess.
I want it to be a media machine PC. Not a server. Not a client.
-
• #1523
i want to use the vpn for torrents basically.
-
• #1524
You want a VPN client.
Use a provider that supports openvpn.
Choose a country that won't just hand over your name when then copyright stasi come knocking.

I've set up VPN using PrivateInternetAccess fine on Ubuntu, there's a guide on their website. (Actually done it on a HP Proliant fine). https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/#ubuntu_openvpn_installer
Alternatively, I'd boot into Ubuntu using a live CD, format the HDD and install WHS from clean.
