• You need gels and 'scientific' pseudofood if you are exercising flat out for over 90 minutes.
For more normal, touring-type riding, eat normal foods at normal mealtimes, with CAKE between meals, eg elevenses and tea-time.
Don't attempt to climb a big hill with a stomach full of greasy food.
Chocolate has a very narrow useful temperature range; it will either melt, or freeze tooth-breakingly solid on your ride, so eat immediately after purchase or give it a miss. Yeasty teacakes are good fuel to keep in your bag, as is Soreen malt loaf. Yazoo or Frijj milk drinks can be good after long distances.
Pseudofoods are usually best left in the shop.
