  • So bought a frame like this from forum (its off to powder on arrival). its an 1986 Dawes Galaxy.

I'd like to eventually get into audax and some touring. I'm struggling with build direction though.

I currently have a nexus 7 spd cannondale, with mudguards and 38c's takes me to work, a 7 spd caad 2 (rsx) and a ten speed chorus carbon/columbus starship.

I'd like to reduce the bikes to fund the build, I'm thinking the dawes as a work bike maybe + do touring? I'd like sti's but worried about issues with frame clearance. Or should I stick to an old type triple bar end shifters etc.

would the carbon be suitable for audax?

  • exciting project you have began skelley. using carbon sounds good it is lightweight and tough at same time. where would u like to use it?

  • I have a raleigh randonneur which is pretty similar. But I've ever gone larger than 35 because of the chain stay clearance.

Lots of audaxers now ride near full carbon bikes, in the 2007 paris brest paris 22% did (of finishers) and since then it's grown.

Looks like an interesting build :)

  • So bit more thought on this...

Thinking dawes could do nicely as a commuter/touring role and for longer audax eventually.

Then the ten speed chorus carbon/columbus starship with a bar bag/saddlepack for early shorter audax and for usual sunny day cycling.

caught between the deore triple/bar end shifters etc or something like a tiagra 10 speed with sti's?

    any touring build links?

  • There's a 5700 groupset for sale on single track world for 200 at the minute. If you sold the calipers on you could buy some mini v brakes with the proceeds. Best of both worlds then, nice comfortable frame and modern reliable shifting.

  • I'm after a triple :( thinking something like this?

  • Ok so frame off to powder coat this weekend. Grey.

Thinking taking the carbon chrous 10 speed onto the galaxy.

If gearing not low enough swap in a sramx9 10 speed and a 10 x 32 cassette down the road.

  • I'm running a ShiftMate on my road bike and love it. Shimano Sora medium cage derailleur and 11-32t cassette with old 9 speed Veloce shifters and Centaur 53/39t cranks. Works perfectly and gives me an awesome range.

  • Ihttp://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/VwAAAOSwFAZTuqJ4/$_57.JPG

  • picked up a 9spd 105 triple partial groupset for cheap. wheels and paint next

  • Finally getting going a bit more on this build.

Bought some hubs, Shimano 5800 105 and some cinellu eubious to go with a cinelli quill stem !

  • Things still to buy, Headset, Rims and old style canti's.

Trying to find a powdercoater that can do metallic in Ireland, A Bob Jackson respray seems a bit strong for an old galaxy at £160 with carriage.

Trying to figure out if should get a319's or open sports, will be using 28c gatorskins.

  • I think a 28 will sit better on the wider rim of the a319.

  • would sputniks even be too heavy, can't decide, bit heavy I think?

It's gonna be for audax or light touring really, maybe 15mm open sports for 28c's or the exal lx17's are a kind of half way house weight/width wise.

  • Open sports or open pro would be good. I've seen a lot of audaxers using open pros.

  • Just wacked some nitromorse on the frame. This new stuff seems shite compared to the good old stuff. Bloody EU.

  • I'd heard that, I wasn't quite ready for how crap. Will leave this on a few hours and go back. If it doesn't work I'll just go and have it blasted.

  • If you need some cantis I have some Shimano. No pads on the actual brakes but I have one pair of unused pads, still in package, meaning you'll need to buy another pair of pads. £10 posted? Can post pics...

  • Sorry that makes it look like I'm trawling lufguss randomly hawking shit!

Very interested in how the build turns out. There was a gorgeous build a bit like this on here. All I can remember is that it was an old red frame with an On One triple crankset...

  • Yeah id be interested. Post up a pic of them.

Got most of the paint off tonight, hopefully tomorrow finishes it.

  • Thinking using gold 50s dawes decals. Over clear powdercoat.

  • Sorry for poor phone pic. They're the Altus BRCT91, apparently. Well used for commuting but I took them off yesterday and gave them a little clean up.
