Thanks for the responses. Peter, yes, that sounds like the easiest and best solution. I like using the sat nav function with a post code to reach a destination with directions, but when I've plotted a route, so long as I can see that I'm on it, that's all that's really needed.
I had used GPX viewer on the iPhone a few times which is a similar, but less elegant approach - and you're prone to having the battery die of course.
