Saint-jean-de-Mauriene is nice - Bourg D'Oisans is probably the obvious choice though for that area - good bike shops, Alp d'huez on your doorstep along with Glandon, Croix de Fer, Galibier.
We stayed here (camped): http://www.fermenoemie.com/ last October - would recommend it
