Since moving to the colonies I've been forced off-road by the drivers, so I use a print-out of a 1:50,000 map (or bought ones since they are so cheap) to help identify the correct gravel road/4WD track/goat path/off-piste route. It's not quite map-and-compass stuff but I've had a few confused moments...
