I'll be back in the gym tonight after a couple of weeks off (holiday then malaise). Considering starting on squats if it's quiet. Been watching too many power lifting videos on yootoob

Can we get the discussion back to those fancy-schmancy adjustable dummbells? I've gotten hundreds of hours use out of my York spinlock dumbbells, but I'm stuck with maximum 25 kgs. In theory I could go up to 30 kgs per dumbbell, but that seems risky to me. I would like to get up to somewhere over 40 kgs ideally. I'm pretty skint by any measure, but given the amount of use I could get out of a pair of adjustable ones I could justify the cost.
My research on the interwebs so far tells me that a lot of people dislike Bowflex. Powerblocks are recommended by lots of people but ugly. My understanding is that they are the priciest option in the US, but on Amazon in the UK there is a deal on the 'sports' series that makes them about the same price as Bowflex. The Ironmaster ones are pricier in the UK than the other two, whereas it seems that in the US it's the other way around. Are any of you guys using them? The cheaper brands, are there any hidden gems among them?

Another reason I want to move out of my flat for a house - a garage for ski shit, bike shit, a whole load of bike shit, and a proper rust and sawdust home gym. I've looked at dumbbells but I've no room. Sorry, this is zero help at all in your quest.
One I've wondered about would be just buying a few weights you would use more regularly and just buy specific weights rather than the less useful adjustable ones?

Powerblock Sport 9.0 Dumbbells (stage 1): Amazon.co.uk: Sports & OutdoorsSurely something like this would make more sense? I feel like you could load this up with more weight in time, but for a fraction of the price? You could also get regular sprung clamps which would take up less real estate on the bar and so you could load it heavier. The tensile strength of the bars will probably be considerably more than the 40kg plates that come with it so if you really wanted to i'm sure you could find slightly larger plates for it and push them to 50-60kg.

And when you upgrade to a proper barbell, you don't need to buy new plates.

Ok so I want to start a bit of body weight training calisthenics type stuff.
to get into better shape and get stronger.I'm 6'3" and 87kg. I have been doing press ups on and off but the most I've ever managed to get to was 40. Currently I'm on about 30.
I also have a chin up bar and can do about 5 pull ups. So I was thinking of doing something like this from baristi-workout.com
Pull-ups
Inverted rows
Dips
Push-ups
SquatsDo 3 sets per each exercise and 5 sets of squats, doing as many repetitions as you can, stopping just before you hit muscle failure. Given that not every beginner will be able to do sets of pull-ups use assisted or negative pull-ups if you’re not strong enough yet.
Don't have anything to do The inverted row on though.
My question is if I'm cycling doing my commute (Crystal Palace to Farringdoj 8 miles in half an hour) twice a day am I going to see any gains or will the cardio kill it?
Sorry for the essay.

Cardio won't kill it. Look at these chaps, they do way more cardio than that ;)
The first of the two has a fairly interesting new youtube channel that talks about strength and body building exercises in a refreshing way. With quite a bit of emphasis on using body weight before moving up to bigger stuff.

Thanks for that I'll check it out. I was just thinking what about th days you're supposed to rest to let the muscles grow does that not really matter as long as you're not directly working them out again the day after?
-
• #213
Generally it's at least a day between muscle groups but I personally think it's bollocks. Apart from leg day you never really overdo it where you can't use it the next day

Saying hi here, powerlifting & now kettle bells at home are my exercise pastimes when not cycling.
Working on pull ups ATM, with narrow shoulders and long arms going from 3 to more will keep me busy for sure.
Trying 50 pull up programme, grip has improved, bench has gone up (? but good) and shoulders happier.

Any powerlifters at Queen Mary's at the moment?

Your bench will increase as lats play a critical role in the bench press also so do your legs which not a lot of people realise , this is really evident if you watch a powerlifter set up on the bench .
Here's a good article on the role of your lower limbs :
Hah, I feel your pain. Or in my case, a bit of sick in my mouth by the third set.
