it says that A foundation degree is a degree level qualification which combines academic study with work place learning. I guess then thats not what i am looking for... I need something that will 'get me up to speed' for a first year type course. Whats that called?

The OU do "Access Modules" that sounds like what you're looking for (they used to be called "Foundation Modules"):-
http://www.open.ac.uk/courses/do-it/access
There's one for Maths and Science.
There's also a website for helping you choose where you should start if you want to study Maths, with examples of the course materials:
http://mathschoices.open.ac.uk/what-are-your-options
I did a full Maths degree part-time with the OU (2005-2012). Well worth it, although I couldn't afford to do it now the fees have gone up (I paid ~£4k, it's now ~£15k).
