Cramping is simple to explain- they will have run a fair bit further than the Italians due to lack of possession. Premier league players are (generally speaking) some of the fittest footballers around, due to the speed football is played at here. The problem is that we're not that smart with our running - despite covering lots of ground there was absolutely fuck all pressure on the ball last night in midfield. Not to mention the fact that the two central midfielders didn't seem to be able to read the simplest of off the ball movement - every time I saw Gerrard he was ball watching.
Honestly I thought Gerrard was woeful, Henderson was industrious but Milner would have been a better choice. Sterling looked OK on the ball but contributed absolutely fuck all the rest of the time. I was actually pretty impressed by Welbeck, especially given he was the only player bothering to win the ball back aside from Jagielka and Cahill. Rooney turned in a fairly typical performance in an England shirt, so no surprise there.
However- the last two games England have played have been the first time in almost a decade that I've seen them play some actual fucking football, and I thought that on balance it was a good game and a fairly decent perfomamce, considering how shit we've been for so long.
