Dont you need spare 'trousers' in case of rain too? It seems like replacing one without the other is a mug's game.
I got one of these http://www.witindustries.nl/products/foldable-bike-fender and it has been perfect. It flat packs and just stays in my bag or jersey pocket. It takes 1 minute to stick it on the bike in case of rain. 100% mud trail free since I got it (in Berlin no less).
