Just buy a Kindle.
They barely change between releases (being just reading devices) and they're good for a few years at minimum (multiple releases of newer models). They also tend to release new models September > October to build up for being a Christmas best seller.
The existing Kindle Paperwhite is awesome. And it is worth getting the 3g one as it makes buying new books when you're done reading one a breeze... or just for changing your mind and buying something interesting when you realise whatever you already have is inappropriate (heavy physics books for holiday lounging).
Just buy one already, no need to wait at all.
The Kindle's advantage isn't a bit of tech (though theirs is exceptionally good), it's the Kindle Store and the range and availability therein, finding whatever you want in an instant.
Which is why the Kindle still beats the others... there's a tech advantage, but it's the distribution and deals that make it win.
