I'm backpacking so the smaller the better. It doesn't need to be smart phone size but I want it to be unobtrusive and to be able to put it in a small day bag without compromising on the rest of the contents. A second lense (if needed) would likely stay in my main bag to be brought out in specific circumstances where I would suck up the extra hassle/space.

Honestly I don't know. I think the majority of the time it will be unnecessary, but if I go the the Antarctic and want to photograph polar bears* will I be kicking myself?

That's a good question. Like everyone I'd like value for money and I'm happy to go second hand. The max I would spend is £800 in total. I like the idea of spending as close to £250 as possible after Ed pointing out the x20.
