I'm having some wheels put together but dont have the time / space / skill to do it myself. They'll be disc compatible touring wheels for a croix de fer, possibly shimano slx to open pro, or maybe something more exotic. I have a budget of around £300.
Anyone had wheels built at Brixton Cycles before? Going to chat to them tomorrow. Also emailed Harry Rowland, though he's quite far away and from his list of brands may not have as much range of choice as BC.
Any input on my possible hub / rim combination, and a good local wheel builder (south london) gratefully recieved.

For £300, you can buy OTP, a little more than that, Hope Pro 2/ZTR Crest is a great wheel for the buck, for cheap, those On-one wheelset can be brought for less than £200.
Not worth going for Open Pro, far too narrow to run bigger tyres, and pointless having braking surface on a disc-equipped bicycle.

I'll be running 25mm tyres, possibly 28s. ZTR Crest might be woo wide for that?
-
• #1955
Nah, I run 25mm on the Crest previously, but for best result, 28mm (or more) is idea, especially for touring on a frame that's designed for 38mm max.

Wow those on-ones are reet heavy. I guess disc brakes on road bikes are a fairly new thing? There's doesn't seem to be anything designed specifically for medium wight road touring. I might go with mavic rims, beefy MTB rims seem like overkill.

2,300g is pretty standard for a strong budget 32h MTB wheelset, the popular road Shimano RS501 is about 1900g.
MTB disc rims isn't heavy, quite the contrary due to the lack of braking surface, if you want to go for Mavic, ditch the Open Pro and get the XM 719 Disc instead, very strong, reasonably light (460g) and a decent width that you can get away with 25mm tyres, which will look tiny in the clearance of the Genesis.

Cheers, sound advice. :)

The disc wheels I have built that people rate the most are Archetype built on Novatec 711/712 with Alpina DB or DT Comp spokes, depending on your weight... I have built many of these and they generally come bang on at your price point, give or take a few pounds as the Novatec often are supplied by the customer from Taiwan (or at least the good ones do come from BDOP Cycling... in the UK we only get unbadged Novatec with the older draggier hub caps and soft free hubs). Send me a PM if you want to have a chat about those.

Just notice Archetype is 10g heavier than XM 719 base on claim factory weight, go figure.

Built on the Novatec 32 H with Alpina spokes they come at just under 1800 g
There are lighter rims (Stans for instance), but having tried most of them on my CX bike, Archetype and A23 are the best -

I have now engaged the long sleepin' trigger finger on the 2015 WU6C 24/28h rim for my fixed build - thanks for the contribution and words.

Cool, could you post pics, weights, and impressions when you get them please?
The 50mm and 38mm look exactly like what I'm going to want, and can hopefully get them in 28h.
-
• #1964
I'm sure you can get them custom drilled for 28h like I did on mine - I'll give feedback when they arrive etc.

**william1984 **- what about Velocity A23? http://www.hubjub.co.uk/index.php/store/rims/velocity-a23-detail they come with a non machined sidewall in 32h so would look the part.
I just got some, just need to decide on hubs and get spokes.

Cost more than Mavic XM 719 though.

Which spokes are you using for this? If you want aero but don't want to spend a fortune and end up with some useless wafer thin spokes that seize-twist and break, try DT Aero Comp... I have used them recently for a rear wheel (couldn't get the size for the front) and they build very stiff... you can save 40 pounds (Euro?) or so over the CX Ray

Thanks for sharing - I'm still in a mess of spoking them wheels. I pretty much got my head sorted for Sapim Laser, but then I read they are not recommended for disc-wheel (I consider the forces of brakeless fixedgear riding to mimic the same forces as a disc wheel, though with less amount&frequentality) - so I got spo[o]ked from the Sapim Laser (elliptical profile is enough aero for me on a short spoke in the 241mm range for me).
But your post made me smell blood, where can I find the DT Aero Comp in the 241mm range? - silver preferred.

Difference between DT Swiss standard nipples and pro head nipples? And is 12mm the recommended length?

Slightly different head design... much ado for nothing really

My last build (2-3 months back) I used CX-Ray and Aerolite laced 32h/28h 3x to Archetypes, but already starting to plan the next lot!
Need to put in some more miles on the current 'good' wheels to get the feel of them properly first, but from the little I've managed, they feel good, certainly an improvement on my WTB 29er/Sapim Race/Novatec D711+712 32h 3x everyday wheels.
But am I right in thinking that substantially stiffer rims, say 38/50mm carbon, can get away with fewer/lighter spokes and still feel as stiff as a more flexible rim with more/stiffer spokes?

Only ones I found was black - http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;product=81815;page=1;menu=1000,2,302,303;mid=0;pgc=16666:16667

Think I'd like to try something like Aero Comps on the loaded wheel side and Aerolites on the other to even the tension, so they build up stiffer than just Aerolites both sides maybe...?

Excellent link, thanks - riding to Warsaw on this scheduled wheelbuild with the full palette of colorful Polish road qualities. With these spokes it looks like I'll be a able to blow while keeping flour in mouth, weight is not of my concern&black spokes doesn't scare me.

"I'll be able to blow while keeping flour in mouth"? o_0
ActionSports and HiBike are pretty good for spokes too.
Measure it yourself, much more accurate.
