  • Killed this one this weekend and i must say that is was pretty tasty..

  • Went to Royal Lochnagar distillery today. Mrs Ball bought me a bottle of this for me birthday in a week or two

What's the style of whisky like from there? Was considering buying a bottle of their 12 year for sentimental reasons, but it doesn't come cheap in the local off licence! Usually prefer Islay-style peaty single malts....

  • It's nice but not very complex - quite light and floral - I like some peat and it's pretty unsatisfying for me in that respect although it would be a really good beginners dram

  • I tanned a bottle of glenfidich with a buddy on sat night. Beginners whiskey, nothing interesting but nothing to dislike either. Bizarrely almost no hangover too, so that was nice.

  • Got a bottle of Glendronach 15 Revival to wet the wean´s head with my old man last week. Sherry Cask, dark coloured whisky. I like it. I like it a lot.

Going to be cycling over to the Glendronach distillery next Saturday. After first stopping off at Glen Garioch.

  • Do they do a tour? You should do it if they do. Or at least have a sample nip.

  • They do a tour ;)

For some years, now, I've had an ambition to run a whisky and cycling tour of my home area (I was born near the banks of the Deveron river), where the countryside is beautiful and there is the densest cluster of distilleries in the world. Next weekend is my first (with my friends from the Brixton Nihilist Cycling Club).

    1. Overnight train from London leaving on Friday night and arriving in Aberdeen in the morning.
    2. Saturday: 19 mile ride to Glen Garioch for a tour, then 18 miles to Glendronach for another tour, then 14 miles to Huntly to stop in a B&B
    3. Sunday: 14 mile ride to Glenfiddich in Dufftown, then 8 miles to Glen Grant in Rothes, then 5 miles to Aberlour, then 9 miles to Cragganmore in Ballindalloch, then 6 miles to Glenlivet on the other side of Ballindalloch, then 14 miles back to Dufftown and another B&B. So Sunday will be 5 tours and rather easier cycling ;)
    4. Monday: in the morning, we're picking two distilleries very close to Dufftown for a couple of tours, then riding 14 miles back to Huntly and catching a train to Aberdeen (only takes an hour). Late lunch in Aberdeen and a train back to London (gets in around 22:30).

Should be a huge amount of fun and having done it once, I will be organising more :) Any takers?

  • Anyone riding out?

  • What, from here to Aberdeen? No.

  • Feck. That sounds amazing Bruce. Enjoy

In fact, Monday will be an 11 mile ride from Dufftown to Strathisla in Keith for a tour, then 11 miles down to Huntly.

Strathisla is a beautiful distillery and it'll be a great tour.

  • two words: Yellow Spot!

  • Sounds ace. Would love to another time.

  • Heading off to catch a train in a couple of hours. Speyside here we come :) Will report back next week. And take loads of pictures.

  • Ardbeg Day tomorrow at the Soho Whisky Club.

    Who's going?

  • you?

  • At some point, definitely.
    Free whisky!
It was that very day two years ago that I joined the club, after a lovely summers day drinking free Ardbeg on the cigar terrace with Kirth.

  • On the way back to Aberdeen after a morning visit to Strathisla (where we had a lovely glass of Glenburgie in the bar). Tour has been ace. Will report later.

  • Nice!

that was a great day. has it been that long already?

  • Last time I was in Millroys I picked up a bottle of bourbon. I chose Rock Town's "Arkansas Bourbon Whiskey", which I'd not tried before. Mmmm, I struck lucky. Unusually complex for a bourbon - toffee, tobacco and dried fruit flavours among others. Nice to sip by itself but makes an awesome mint julep.
