  • condor (east/central) but tbh for good bike fit you shouldn't discount traveling 5 miles

  • Anyone know why my little toes get numb on 50k+ rides?
Starts on the little toes then creeps up to the next toes.

  • I get the same thing but it starts in my middle toes and spreads outwards. A good wiggle brings the life back to them but I don't know why it happens - I get it regardless of shoe type and pedal system.

  • Cold air? Or blood going to your legs instead of you extremities? Your toes being the extremities you use he least.

  • shoes too tight?

  • shoes too tight?

Boffers could never find shoes too small for her tiny little feet :-)

  • Tried different shoes and it happens on different bikes too.
    It's a bit weird.
Was also getting a bit of pain under my foot just behind toes. Seems to be relieved when I apply pressure on the underneath of my foot.

  • Arch support might be necessary.

What you described is known as hot spot, if you have no arch support, your feet flex in the empty space and put a lots of pressure on the front part of your feet.

  • Has anyone had wedges added under their cleats? Kind of like compensating for pronation when running but for cycling.

  • Usually if one of your legs is slightly shorter than the other, but it's easier to put shims under the insoles.

  • I was thinking more along the lines of your feet tilting toward the outside or inside. I feel I pedal with the outer side of my feet if that makes any sense.

  • Specialised BG do wedges for varus tilt.

  • Might check it out, alternatively I'll probably try and find a bike fit that do wedges too. Any recommendations?

  • Do you walk on the outside edge of your feet as well, or do you roll through your stride onto the ball of your foot?

  • Do you need varus or valgus wedges? I have spare valgus ones from when I bought the specialised wedges as you get a pair of each type in the box.

  • ^^I think I walk 'normally', onto the ball of my foot. I'm going to get an assessment at Asics soon to determine this.

DJ, not even sure if I need wedges, it's just a feeling. I've had bad knees and am on the way to recovery. I'm always thinking of things that may have cased the bad knees apart from the slight bad fitted bike ans cleats.

  • Arch support might be necessary ...

Yeah? I'd be up for some arch support recommendations. Especially the ones where you can alter the height. Can't seem to find anyone retailing those G8 thingies online.
I think I remember Ndeipi saying that arch support sorted out all his problems.

  • Giro and Specialized have some selection for you to choose from.

  • Jeez - if you are true to size at 55 - you could probably go 1cm up or down.

I'm pretty much bang on 55, but given that bike manufacturers don't give a shit about 55cm people, I either end up on a "54" with 130mm stem, or a "56" (often a 56.5-57 ETT) with a 100 or 110 depending on how economical with the sizing the bike manufacturer has been.

  • Husy - just on the subject of arch support - i get horrific ankle pain if I don't wear in soles. I'm as flat footed as can be. I've had the hospital give me in-soles designed to my own feet but they don't last forever. Nearly spent 300 quid getting sturdier supports done, but the cost put me off. These eventually came out and thought I'd try before spending that much, and they've worked great for me the last few years:

I've had other brands that have worked fine too, but I tried boots own and they caused me pain, so you need to be careful. Anyway, I don't need to wear them cycling and neither do I have your issue, but I like these as they are not full length like the ones pictured above, so i've had no problem fitting them in any type of shoes. Could be worth a pop at 25 quid - especially as you said you have bad knees.

I'm copying and pasting this straight into the cool stories thread.

  • Cheers!

    Your bars are too high.

  • Shoes too tight??

  • The whole stack and reach thing has probably been covered lots of times but couldn't be arsed reading the entire thread. I just finished my cannondale 2.8 which fits me reasonably well, got cheap chinese carbon wheels for it that had less than excellent quality and as a result am now being offered replacement rims plus a sizable discount on one of the sellers crabon frames. Am tempted to give the seller another chance but unsure of the geo. As best as I can measure frame/interpret old catalogues the 2.8 has 73 deg ST/HT angles and a 415 mm reach, 575 stack, 1000 mm wheelbase.
The crabon frame geo chart says 73 STA, 73.5 HTA, 386 reach and 582 stack, 982 mm wheelbase.
My confused and cognitively challenged brain is doing its best to figure these things out. I'm thinking the slightly steeper HTA of the crabon frame paired with a slightly longer stem will sort out the reach, and the slightly higher stack will be compensated by the integrated lower stack headset (2.8 has external HS). Sound about right, or have I misunderstood anything? How about a shorter wheelbase, what effect will this have? Thanks in advance.

  • Head tube angle play very little importance in reach, the seat angle does.

    stack and reach is covered here;
