• Where are they a tenner? Only cheap ones i found on there are 20 quid

  • They also look IDENTICAL to these:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/token-tk9741-2-aero-clip-on-bars-and-pads/#tabCustReviews
    but without the branding?

Hopefully that works. If not I'll sort it when not on the iPhone.

  • Oh no i was thinking more 'TT style' like the ones i posted, with elbow pads, not sure though as it might look massively out of place, the ones on your bike look rad though, really nice bike!

  • Hmm before buying I'd probably have preferred straighter ones actually but couldn't find at a decent price.

My bar tape seems to be padded enough. They bars came with sticky backed foam pads but I dont think i need them.

  • So, I've been feeling that my poor old Surly has been taking itself a little too seriously lately which has resulted in it staying in the garage and the Kona coming out more often.

I strapped a drybag to the Tiramisu bars and went a good long ride a few weeks ago

but since then I'd fitted a rear Crud Catcher (the original one with the alloy stays) and it was starting to get too functional if that's possible. If I was just going out for a spin in the woods I'd definitely been favouring the Kona.

Now, I love the Kona too but the Surly is just that little bit more special for me so I want to make sure it gets as much use as possible. Like I said in the OP I'd wanted one for a while, since seeing it in the Surly catalogue I picked up when buying a Singleator (in Alpine bikes or at least I think it was still called that back then, pre Tiso takeover on Gt Western road proper).

Surly posted this recently and that photo of the 1x1 took me back to seeing it in the catalogue years ago.

Don't worry, I'm not planning a super anal Retrobikes-esque restoration to catalogue spec (if only because that'd leave the rear canti cable bridge unused and I can't abide unused canti cable bridges!) but I have just bagged myself an old Nitto made 1x1 Torsion bar on eBay.

I've also been on a used Thomson stem buying spree recently (4 in as many days) so I'll be playing about with a few lengths and angles to see what suits/fits best.

The Control Tech stem and Midges have been shipped over to the Kona but as that was running the HS33 up front I need another canti to get that all working together.

Next decision is whether to keep the ATACs on the Surly or swap with the DX flats that are on the Kona, I've been liking them the last few times I've been out.

  • Good find! The old catalogues are really great. I find it ironic that it says 'cheap' on the front, when Surly isn't really that cheap at all for cromoly tubing. I love them all the same, though.

  • Yeah they're really not very cheap now, wonder if it was a different story back in the day. I remember them being out of my budget but then the Singleator was about all my budget ran to!

  • I think they're still relatively cheap in the US compared to Europe. I think I was talking to my LBS and they mentioned the 1x1 used to be a lot cheaper before the addition of disc mounts too but I can't remember exactly how that conversation went.

  • Going to look pretty sweet with the new bars, I was watching but not paying attention when they ended :(

I can imagine you're right about the American v European pricing. To flip it around, I've seen Pompinos on US eBay going for several times what they cost here.

I also think though that as one of the sort of leaders of fatbike development Surly have seized the opportunity to fleece hipster pseudo adventurists with both hands and they've probably inflated the prices on the rest of the range to bring them more inline.

Thank goodness, my max bid wasn't much more than they went for, definitely didn't need another bidder in there!

I really want a 1x1, I'd have absolutely no use for it but they remind me of my old rigid Gary Fisher Marlin, which was super rad.
Hmm... none on eBay at the mo, probably a good thing.

  • Ha, you got me!

  • Sorry bud, couldn't help myself, looked back for the link to your thread as soon as I saw it. No malice intended, enjoy your new bike sir.

  • Got my Torsion bars fitted, along with a pair of King cages and went for a ride today. Much better, back to the way it was when I first built it. I even made it up a particularly tough switchback climb on the Cathkin mtb course that's been beating me recently.

I even had time to head to the park to take some photies,

Oh and I felt the bearings in my rear wheel were a bit rough so switched them out with some I had in the toolbox - bit peed off that they've gone so quickly but I guess the wheelset was super cheap. Mood was rectified when, while removing the rear wheel I realised my frame has Sub11 ends. This article on the Surly blog seems to suggest that this means mine is an early version, probably earlier than I thought.

  • Really like the build, had a bit of a chat with the Surly guys about the 1x1 and when they used to make/have Nitto make bars. One of them has 3 1x1s he likes them that much...

Still keeping my fingers crossed for one going cheap on eBay, would love to own one even though I've got a KM now.

  • Awesome news about the frames age! Good article too.

  • Might as well bung this in here since it's vaguely mtb related.

I picked up a 1990 Muddyfox Pathfinder the other day from Retrobike - I didn't need it nor have a clue what I'd actually do with it but it was cheap and local so why not!

Looked roughly like this when I collected it (saddle and tyres in this image were not included, I got oe Muddyfox items instead).

I spent today in the garage seeing what would and what would not fit and ended up with,

I have a pair of the Bonty Hanks and hoped both would fit but rear clearance was just too tight.

The photo above was a little bit before I finished up for the day actually, it's now got a V brake on the front and a Deore HT2 single ring chainset. There's a friction thumby and a '92ish XT rear mech plus some pink gear outer (to match the brake outer I'll be using) on the way and I'm gonna order an LX canti from CRC for the rear, might get one for the front too but might stick with the parts bin V.

  • YES!
    Love it.

  • I wanted to fit a rear rack but isn't going to be so easy as the frame has no mounts at the top of the seat stays and due to the wishbone P clips aren't an option.

Oh, I'm going to fit the rear Crud I had very temporarily on the 1x1 (and probably the matching front since I have it) to this. I thought about full mudguards but I have the Cruds so will see how I get on with them before spending any money on other guards.

  • I wish saarf applied some of your creativity to his mtb builds.

  • What bars you got on that muddy fox there?

  • Cheers TM.

The bars are actually stainless steel replica Triumph Bonneville bars with a bit chopped off either side. They've been kicking around since I had a Royal Enfield. Cut them down when I fitted them to a bike I build for the gf but wish I hadn't now as the straight is barely long enough for a grip and a brake lever, the thumbshifter will have to get mounted on the angled part of the bar I think.

  • How many speeds is it? I might have a basic 7 speed "sti" kicking about, old acera or alivio maybe... Bit ugly with a dial on top.

  • I've got an 8 speed block on it the now.

Cheers for the offer but I'm actually happier with a friction shifter I think. Less to go wrong apart from anything.
