Please help!
I had my fixed gear stolen this morning outside the Natural History Museum having put the finishing touches on it a couple of days ago. I don't have any pictures but if anyone sees anything that matches the following description, please post. I've spent so much time/money getting this bike shipshape, can't bear to lose it!
- Frame: Resprayed gloss black 64cm Raleigh Record Sprint with no markings/decals
- Wheels and tyres: White Halo Aerotrack wheels with black and white Schwalbe tyres
- Saddle: White Selle Italia
- Drivetrain: Silver Token crankset with black pedals and footstraps. Black Token chainring.
- Bars/stem: Black quill stem and black bull horn bars with white tape. Right-hand front brake.
Thanks.
Can you share the lock you used and could you tell how the thieves went through it?

Many many pages back, you'll see I was mugged for my Dolan at the end of October 2011 on Roman Road late at night.
After searching for weeks online, staking out brick lane and going round to all the bike shops, I gave up looking.
Today, I saw it locked up in Stokey, with same wheels and even phil sprocket.
Unfortunately, it looks like the poor sod who had it actually paid 'non-stolen' price for it. Assuming he's telling the truth, I feel very sorry for him.
The police are being very helpful, guess I was lucky there also, he seemed to have trouble getting any assistance from his co-workers.
So, even though its been a few bikes since, I guess the moral is to keep your eyes peeled not matter what and know that on occasion (as rare as it may be) the karmic bike gods will eventually help you out.

So I'm back from a 5 hour stake-out of Bricklane market earlier this morning. . . . . .
A couple of months ago we had several saddles stolen from bikes parked outside the office. One of the victims, Anna, phoned the police on 101 and reported it to the cycle task force. She also got the images from the landlord's cctv.
The next Saturday she went to Brick Lane early and saw someone with the same rucksack as in the cctv, selling saddles to stallholders. She phoned the police and the guy was arrested, she got her saddle back.
When all the police processes are complete she will write it up on our website. It worked for her because she could positively identify the saddle and had already reported it to police before visiting the Lane. -

It is still your bike, get it back and get the person who bought it to take it up with the person who sold it to him.

Could be a fun summer after allBit overboard maybe?
What if we could have groups stationed at each market on the Saturday and Sunday - Bricklane, Walthamstow, Borough. When a blatantly stolen bike is spotted take a photo of it and post it on twitter with a short description and hashtag (#bikestakeout or similar).
Collectively anyone anywhere can browse this hashtag, and flag it up if they spot their bike. The group in that vicinity can then commandeer it until the owner and/or police turn up "sorry mate but we're taking this - it's stolen and the police are one their way".
Minimum teams of 4 for each market, but the more the better. Bring Tyskies, get pissed and obnoxious, fuck up their business - but keep it civil and in public. If done right who knows how many bikes could be recovered? At the very least it would send a message.

Not your problem tbh, he should have asked the seller for a receipt and checked that the details given were legit. Hope you have already got your bike back.

Sorry to hear that! Quite a bike to lose, on the upside that's going to be hard to flog online without you knowing, as those frames are pretty unique

If anyone is planning on potentially commandeering bike from the scum on Brick Lane make sure there are enough of you and that you're willing to "bring" it- because there are some horrible types.
The level nonchalance from the plastic and real cops alike is disgusting. To see something stolen, to point it out and to have them ignore you makes them part of the problem. Based on a story I heard, I wonder if some of them are taking back handers? If you really want to do something then my vote would be to shame those middle class knobheads that keep the trade alive by buying stuff at prices that really are too good to be true. They do know better but choose to ignore their conscience. Twats.

Geep and dicki on board
No one is commandeering anything. That idea is ridiculous. Taking pictures and placing on a site for all the public to see is a great idea but that is plan B
Plan A: utilise our anonymity to our advantage. Don't waste time with the small stuff. The bikes being sold on ONE day. Locate and positively identify the LOCKER where these bikes come from. Good Surveillance is the key.
And while we have crimestoppers trolling this site rather than getting the police to get up off their arse I will say.
My ethos:
Surveillance,
locate the source lockers
Identify main traders
Recon and post regular images to the public - this is not for the owners to be able to identify cause they probably won't be able to easily. Especially after the brick lane scum paint and disguise their stolen wares and mix and match. This is done to shame the police into action and you the trolls for not lighting a fire and their arse. What I'm not doing is compromising my anonymity buy making a fuss and commandeering stolen property. I don't expect anyone who joins me too. Most importantly we pay the police to do that.
Besides done that before and it wasn't worth the hassle. Too much time wasted and stolen goods continued to be sold while it was happening. Waste of my time.
Anyone else in now you have a clearer idea.
Summer is upon us lets get cracking cause crime waits for no man. PM me. -

Wouldn't be in for following them - a professional bike thief is going to have much sharper eyes than you, and I don't fancy anyone's chances skulking down side-streets and garage lockups after one. All it takes is for one to clock you, take a detour down a quiet street then turn around brandishing a screwdriver in your face.
After I emailed the cycle task force someone showed up at my door a couple days later who was emphatic that they do recover bikes, sometimes 6 months, a year later. Also the importance of registering your bike's serial number (something I'd failed to do) - this is obvious from a functional level of police time - the difference between searching a description than a single number.
Re. multi grooves: The idea that the police would take back-handers from bike thieves is ridiculous. This is a city with the highest proportion of billionaires in the EU, with masaratis / ferraris speeding up and down mayfair... so I think a bent copper could a little better than that. The problem here is more likely to be that we are talking about bicycles in the first place, not masaratis.
Collectively we're in a far better position to change the culture and market for stolen bikes than do the police's job for them (although that doesn't mean we shouldn't try). The safest option would be to stay in role - you're a civilian so you're well within your rights to take photos of something you're about to buy etc. I'm down with the idea of shaming people but the benefit of the doubt should be given first - at Bricklane there was a little old lady buying a "bike for my daughter" off a patently dodgy guy who was giving it the whole "yeah yeah yeah love, it's really quality and that, has new brakes and everything - yours for £60". She could've been wilfully naive or just genuinely naive, hard to tell.
So how about this:
Campaign of posters dissuading people from funding bike theft
A weekend where it is impossible for anyone to sell a stolen bike in London - mass flyering / photo takingThere are the obvious warning signs that a bike is stolen so print flyers listing these and hand them out to people who are about to buy one. If they still go ahead, take a photo of them and stick it online. This alone would probably attract enough grief, so being smart and sticking to groups would be needed.

I was stopped for a RLJ recently, police didn't give a fuck about the bike I was riding or any sort of check on it. If it became common practice to check bikes match owners whenever someone is stopped and also make shops check bikes whenever they come in(even for a puncture) bike theft would die overnight, nobody would buy a bike that might be stolen knowing full well that the first time they go into a bike shop and/or are stopped for anything the bike would be taken off them.
