If it's under just £200, might as well go Sora, surely you can mix-match some MTB component to keep the cost down further?
Because the heavy discounters don't go below 105, it's actually hard to justify an after-market purchase of anything below that. Who would want a £260 Tiagra groupset when 5700 is only +£40, or even £215 Sora. If you're buying 1000 sets to put on OTP bikes, the price differences are bigger, but basically individual customers get OEM pricing on the top 3 groups and retail pricing on the bottom 3.
If you were going to mix and match, you'd start with ST-5700 levers and then save money elsewhere if you have to, but the whole groupset deal is so good that you'd really have to shop around just to get something worse for the same money buying components separately.

They don't measure people, they check what size they have most of and convince customer that's the size they want
FTFY.
Not always the case, but unfortunately it is too often.

Given that a proper bike fit costs ~£200, it's unsurprising that bike shops don't want to give them away for free. It's also good business for bike sellers that so many people don't realise that spending that money first is better value than getting three successive different bikes that don't fit before the penny drops :-)

I'm getting the point but he doesn't want to spend 200 on the whole bike :P

Then I respectfully suggest that your friend isn't in the market for a bike that fits like a glove.

OK, I'll do an #internetbikefit based on what you've told us so far :-)
For somebody 6' tall with a 35" inside leg, a typical square-ish 24" road frame is likely to be too long, unless he has arms like an orang utan. I'd be looking for something more like 22-23", probably favouring the smaller end of that range.
-
• #59758
that sounds a lot better :)
And no, he doesn't have arms the size of an orang utan :P Thanks :P

So are you gonna PayPal mdcc_tester the £200 now then?

What's with the P?

Very true, quite frustrating seeing people trying their best to enjoy riding on bicycles that's clearly too big for them because the Halfords staff tell them so.

You think that selling technique is restricted to Halfords and that level of outlet?
-
• #59764
Nope, but Halfords is the worst, as if they think the human body can twerk that far.

Woah, had not seen that pic before, only the ones released from that session after potato-chopping

I have a window in one wall and a mirrored door in a wardrobe on the opposite wall.
Why can I see quite a lot if the tree through the window but in the mirror I see less and more close up?
Bad Feng Shui.

Something to do with the refractive index of the glass and snells law I think.

he needs to know the size of the frame so he can get an old road bike frame.
Doing it backwards!
He should just build up the bike with the old frame, of approximately correct size. Then after maybe a year or more of riding it, he would have both built up more tolerance of being on bikes/flexibility and have a sense of the shortcomings of his existing bike, what tweaks like handlebar/bottom bracket position will feel superior.

Lamp boss on old British forks.
Is there a standard thread, or do I just try bolts until one fits? -

Really? I'll need to google.
I thought it was just because as I lie in bed and look to my left I'm like 4ft from the window so get quite a wide viewing angle through it whereas the mirror is around 10ft from the window so reflects a narrower view through the window. Kind of like why perspective and stuff looks different through telephoto and wide angle camera lenses.

Also (and this comes from Chris Juden, so it's probably right) M8×1.0 (i.e. fine pitch) is close enough. Not that I'd expect many people to stock M8 fine, you'll find millions of M8×1.25 for every fine pitch screw.
Another viable bodge is to find an old British front hub with the same thread on the axle and use part of that with a locknut..
