  • Chilli chilli bang bang street feast at Dalston Yard tomorrow, I am excited! Love all things chilli.

  • Best place for a nice meal around waterloo for my beautiful gal before going to the Old Vic? Am pretty hell bent on Foxlow but am open to suggestions closer by.....

  • Byron Burger

  • Masters Superfish

  • 4-pack of Sainsbos white choc and orange cookies, HHHHNNNGGGGG

Given I'm putting in a few shifts at a Sainsbury's bakery, between jobs and starving like all good artists must endure, it's amazing I've not yet tried them. They come in a fluorescent bag and smell like every other in-store bakery product, which let me tell you amount to nothing more than prepared matter being put through an oven like those semi-baked baguettes to finish at home every supermarket sells - nothing's made from scratch like you may assume. It's all just boil in a bag gear. Anyway, the Belgian chocolate shortbread from the same range is killer, despite its deception.

  • Baltic? Anchor & Hope? Tapas place on The Cut? TAS?

Their 4-packs of choc chip shortbread are immense, and probably a key player in my paunchy downfall

  • Going to try Bird on sunday, bottom of Kingsland Road, could be cynical trend-hopping trash, could be great, but happen to be in the area for the Modern Show and Mrs G doesn't like Monkey Fingers (is she on an E??) so it's chicken for brunch

  • Veggie replacement for fish sauce?

    Standard lazy ignorant comment

I bought some kimchi from the Haringey Pickle people at a fair in Tottenham on Monday after being assured it was vegetarian, but it smells so fishy I'm sure it's not. Hmm.

  • Fish/shrimp sauce used not to be declared on the pre-packaged kimchi packaging that you can buy over here. Now it's declared and I think vegetarians/vegans realise that for years they ate kimchi that probably included it--it's a standard ingredient, and I suspect that perhaps the people who sold you this made the standard assumption that vegetarians eat fish or that fish sauce is acceptable to vegetarians. It's very easy to make vegan kimchi, though.

  • The guy on the stall said pretty clearly that it was vegan, and another woman came along while I was at the stall and asked if it contained fish and he said no. But it was homemade, and put into a small tub from a big dish, so there are no ingredients on it, and frankly, I'm just not sure I believe the guy.

  • I'd go back and ask about specific ingredients. If he clearly says that there's no fish or shrimp sauce in it, I'd say you can probably believe him. Ask him what he's substituted it with. I can well imagine it smelling 'fishy' even without fish sauce--it is fermented, after all.

  • Why does it matter? He's said it doesn't and you bought it. Nuffield said

  • Just eat it

    ...

Bit harsh? But fair enough I am big enough to go to Google on my own now.

  • Bought a 2kg leg of pork at a good local butcher yesterday. Made a paste of two entire heads of garlic, loads of crushed cumin and black pepper olive oil a little bit of fennel seed too. stuffed, poked, stabbed and massaged it into every nook and cranny and wrapped in cling film and left in the fridge for 36 hours. It's about to come out of the oven to rest while I finish off the crackling, apple sauce, spuds, leeks and cabbage. I'm already halfway though a rather good bottle of dry white and there's another in the fridge. Am feeling very content and Sundayish.

  • ^ Sir, will you adopt me?

  • Bit harsh? But fair enough I am big enough to go to Google on my own now.

I didn't mean it like that at all, I was merely suggesting that in a simpler, less enlightened times, the standard response to a comment requesting advice on vegetarian ideas would have been something lazy and ignorant like "vegan thread >>>>>>"

In no way was I trying to suggest you were lazy and ignorant for asking here.

    Humblest apologies.

  • Buckaroo did you recently buy a big green egg of something? Your porcine posts on the last page got me going.

Nah, have just built a pizza oven from scratch in the garden tho.

I like the idea of the new mini green egg. But all the porcine treats have been me dicking around with my oven and BBQ.

  • Any recommendations for the best Vietnamese on (or close to) Shoreditch Highstreet/Kingsland Rd?
