• Just seen this thread. If nothing comes of the below email, I might have to follow some of the advice. Just sent this to TfL:
    Hi,

I would like to make a complaint about one of your drivers.
The incident happened at 6:30pm on 03/05/14 at the junction between Bloomsbury Road and Southampton Row. My girlfriend and I were waiting on our bicycles at a red light indicating to turn right. The cabbie in question was behind us. My girlfriend and I were side by side in the road so that we would not be cut up when the lights changed green. With the lights still red, the cab pulled around us, about half way past me and half on the left hand lane. The lights turned green and the cab cut sharply back in front of me narrowly missing me. At which point I tapped the cabs back left window with the intention of letting the driver know that he had behaved dangerously at to let him know that I how close he was. The driver stopped briefly and then accelerated and turned sharply left, veering dangerously close to my girlfriend who was in front of me. He drove as close to her as possible and turned right at the last minute so as to make her ride into the pavement. I do not think this was an accident, but a deliberate attempt to intimidate or even hit her. The driver then accelerated away down Southampton Row towards Theobalds Road. The driver had now cut us up twice deliberately. As the traffic was slow he had to stop soon and I was easily able to catch him. I went to the driver side window to confront him. At which point he started swearing profusely at me for tapping his window. Words to the effect of 'Why the f*k did you hit my window?!' I told him why. I was understandably angry at this point and I'm certain I swore back at him. He continued yelling. He called me a ct at least twice and threatened to get out the car and knock me out. Words like 'You don't want me to get out the car cos I'll knock you out' and similar threats. After the exchange had continued for a short time, I decided to give up. I told him to get lost, and the cabbie drove on. At this point we were next to the bus stop on Southampton Row (Theobalds Road Southampton Row, bus stop X). I remember this because I apologised to the people waiting. My girlfriend and I continued, but the cab had stopped at the next lights, and we did not want to cycle close to him again. We got off the road, and took out our phones, and managed to get photos of both of his number plates. The photo from behind actually shows him cutting up another unconnected cyclist whilst trying to get away from our cameras.
His number plate is T323 AGH. I think his license number is 54700, or possibly 51700, the cab is light blue with advertising of some sort on.

I realise that tapping his window may be seen as not the correct way to have proceeded, but having been dangerously overtaken, it doesn't seem like an over reaction. There was no need to attempt to pass us in the first place seeing as the traffic so slow we would have overtaken him in a very short time. That he then swerved dangerously and deliberately towards us and mainly my girlfriend easily justifies my worries over this driver. Tapping a window should in no way justify the torrent of abuse and threats that this driver then gave me. I would like to add that I in no way retorted with a threat. There would be many witnesses to this incident, but unfortunately both of us were quite shaken and have no contacts for witnesses.

Attached are the two photos of his number plate.
Please let me know how you proceed in this matter.

    Thank you,
    Legomartian..

Im not out of line in any way am I?

  • Not at all, if anything you did more than necessary. I wouldn't have admitted to swearing at him ;)

  • The very most they could do would be to report your account to him. I assume he would then deny it or suggest that you were a lot more aggresive than you claim. As with many of the incidents reported here and in other threads you have no evidence - just your (and your girlfriend's) word against his. You would need film of the incident or independent witnesses. On that basis there is really nothing they can do. How could they? Would you accept your boss disciplining you just because someone said you did something even though there is no evidence, let alone proof, of it?
Although if one driver is getting a lot of reports about his/her behaviour it might count for something in future regarding his/her reputation so I do think it is worth reporting for that reason.

  • Report away. If this isn't the first report - it might be the straw which broke the camel's back.

  • GF just mentioned CCTV… its a busy road.

  • If you want any CCTV footage you'll have to do the legwork and may have to use the Data Protection Act in order to get it.

  • I think I might have met a psychopath van driver today. I was going to work, cycling on Acton's Street needed to take a right turn onto Gary's Inn Road heading to King's Cross... there was no traffic in front of me, so I indicated and moved to the right, and then there was this van from behind started hocking, and he over took my as I was just about to take that right turn, he left me with very little gap, so I had to slam my brakes, I shouted 'What the hell did you do that for?" He had obviously heard me loud and clear as his window was lowered, he then made a sudden stop in front of me, leaving about half a meter gap and he gave me the thumbs up, indicating I should go through that gap... erm... I think I know better... typically, I forgot to charge my GoPro last night...

  • TFL liveried crane thingie blasting through the red light on Westminster Bridge Southbound approach with half a dozen cyclists starting to make the dodgy right turn into Whitehall. WAC.

Also had the odd experience last night of a car overtaking me really closely on a completely clear road then, as soon as he had got past, pulling way out almost into the other lane for a few seconds before pulling back in.

  • reported a bus driver who as I was overtaking when he was at a bus stop started to pull off and obviously saw I was nearly past but sped up instead of letting me go. I get ahead and there's a zebra crossing ahead and I stop to let the ped cross. bus driver honks his horn, pulls up to me and squirts me with washer fluid before ranting at me in some east european language and shouting "fuck" in my face. told me I shouldn't stop like that.

I obviously pointed out the zebra crossing and that he should have given me space and time.

Thinking about it, I maybe should have just let him win his little race rather than going past him. But he should have just given me time to get by, right?

  • someone marking what looked like english composition papers whilst behind the wheel on croxted road this morning. i did a lol.

  • Sugoi, where were you when that happened? I had something weirdly similar happen on Sunday morning coming southbound down the A1 in Archway, just before the hill. The bus driver sounded eastern European or Russian, from the few expletives I heard.
He seemed to take offence to me cycling two-up with a clubmate, so was honking his horn and slowed the bus right down to gesture at us and motion that we should be in single file. This was clearly an anger management/anti-cyclist issue because the road was completely empty and he could overtake easily.
I was on the way home from really good ride, so I was in a good mood and responded by giving him a really loud cheer and a wave and ignoring him being negative.
He overtook, honking his horn some more, then as we approached him at the next bus stop he was leaning out the window, looking at us and clearly waiting for us. As we came near he shouted "HEY BITCH!" (or, more accurately, "HEY BEEEEEECH!") but I didn't catch the rest because I was cheering again and giving him another wave.
We shot off down the hill as he was impotently honking his horn behind us.
It stuck in my head because I almost never get aggro from bus drivers, I find that they are usually very calm. CCTV in the cabs probably helps with that. But I'd be interested to know if you were anywhere in the Archway area when it happened to you. It was a double-decker bus, but I can't remember the number plate or bus number.

  • It was just past St Pancras Hospital. route 46 (single decker). It was the worst behaviour from a bus driver I've encountered. To spray me was pathetic.

Traffic Droid had a nasty encounter with a bus driver in Kentish Town a month or so ago with a pretty horrible driver who was eastern european. nearly hit him then down the road he comes within inches of taking him out. deliberate intimidation using his bus and then just kept laughing at him. I would link it but he seems to have taken it down from his youtube account.

  • vote UKIP!

  • ha! some of my best friends are eastern european...

    (<<) (>>) (<__<)

got a ukip leaflet through my door yesterday. thought I'd managed to avoid them

  • got a ukip leaflet through my door yesterday. thought I'd managed to avoid them

One appeared in my letterbox the other day... addressed to my "better half". I haven't spoken to her since.

  • You could argue that his flag is part of the bike, so they need to pass three feet away from that. Otherwise what are you measuring from? All a little silly really, but I totally understand his frustration.

That's why I ride with a broom handle strapped across my bars...

  • I had a bus overtake me at speed then pull across my path / cutting me up this morning. It was very quick, very scary and the driver thought his actions were fine. I have footage of the incident and would like for his employers to point out where he was wrong so that he rethinks his driving around other road users in the future.
Does anyone know the best way of doing this? ideally with a way of sending the video footage? I'm not one to point out every persons small mistake but this was well out of order, especially given how wet it was. I couldn't believe he thought that it was fine to treat me like that. And it was very scary. Worse than Insidious.

  • You can upload it to Vimeo and set it to private except for those who got the password to see it.

  • Thanks ed.

  • Had a dickhead on a scooter purposely overtake me on the right and cut across my front wheel to turn left this morning. Got me thinking, what are the physics of me being able to push a scooter rider onto the ground without ending up on the deck myself. (Not that I would ever do this of course)

  • Take up polo and learn to check people.

  • I would guess pretty unlikely. They have far more mass than you (even hippy I'd imagine), and are on a much wider/more stable platform (wide/low pressure tires).

Sure tester will be over shortly with some actual maths

  • Just shove harder.

  • If you took enough force into it you could push over a car, although you are unlikely to come out of that too well yourself.

  • If you caught them unaware and really gave them a good shove as hard as you could, depending on your own bike handling skills I'm sure it's doable.

You'd have to be able to get away pretty sharpish though, incase they came after you. You'd also have to factor in wherever your escape route would still allow a moped to follow.

Never do the above though, obviously.
