Is the session really limited to 16 riders on the track at one time?
I was on Herne hill today with 70. I know its half the size and twice as fast but still seems a bad health and safety calculation. If it still counts towards to full accreditation im still keen but I'm already accredited for Herne Hill, will this hour count for anything in advance to that?
Any chance of two sessions.. one for accredited forum riders and one without?

The thing about the Stratford track is even though it's probably the same width, due to the banking it seems a lot narrower, the corners are extremely sharp and you can't just cruise around the top if you get tired because it's just too steep to do that, you'll slip the whole way down. Overtaking and other stuff also needs to be done efficiently and with communication because you have less space. In short it's a lot less forgiving than HH. I wouldn't want to be on it with more than 20 other experienced riders, let alone inexperienced ones.

On the other hand, the limit at Calshot is 16, and it's barely over half the length of the Pringledrome.
-
• #184
I would say more about coaches to riders ratio too. Only one coach standing on the finish line for my Stratford session.

See at about 1m00s here, they're only doing about 15mph right at the top of the banking, it's not like you have to be doing 30mph to stay up.

Presumably the fact that they have £££ tyres and don't suck helps though. Saw a couple of people slip on Saturday and deck it

A speed some of the people doing the taster session on Thursday were having trouble achieving...

Yes, I'm not saying you have to be going top speed but at HH training sessions people ride up to the top when they're too tired to stay in a group/after a sprint and need to rest so are both decelerating and too knackered to keep pushing the pedals hard. You can comfortably crawl around the top at less than 10mph at HH, whereas I don't think you could do that at Stratford without slipping to your doom.

Reading the tire regulations for stratford and I'm finding the confusing.
First they list manufacturers that are allowed...
Users must use Continental, Schwalbe, Tufo or Vittoria clinchers or tubulars (black tread only), 21 mm or wider.
Then they list a Manufacturer that isn't allowed, suggesting that your fine so long as its isnt this one?
Do not use Michelin tyres or any dual compound tyres or tyres with coloured treads.
My tires are single compound Kenos.. not on the list of allowed or denied.
????????????????????????????????????? -
• #191
There is no contradiction there, you can use black Contis but not coloured ones. You can't use any Michelins whatever colour they are.
Get some tyres from one of the permitted manufacturers to avoid trouble. Vittoria Diamante Pista are good and cheap, you'll want some tyres you keep exclusively for indoors anyway.
-
• #192
Tommy, aren't your tyres on the board man white anyway? Get some better rubber! :)
-
• #193
Well they are Vittoria rubios Mixed compound tires but to reiterate it is not my bike / they are not my tires.

This way you'll be training from your current accreditation level, or will start the accreditation.
All of this also means... you don't have to be accredited in advance... but if you are going through accreditation you can work towards completing part of it within the session.
This is not the case, club sessions do not count towards accreditation.
*also British cycling federation membership will be required for all riders. -

*update
Found a workaround to the requirement to have BCF membership.
Signup before the day and then cancel it within 30 days under the distance sellers act.I've done just this with LFGSS listed as my club.

So... this appears to be coming up.
I've decided to work out the costs and sell you the tickets already :)
Let's begin with the costs:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SE6yzz2SjdncPtd_3EFvW5T9FvIFn73HBAnCa4Bp1yQ/edit?usp=sharingThere are 48 riding slots, with a maximum of 16 riders on the track at any given moment.
I am going to ask for this session to be part of the Pathway to Accreditation, so it should count towards that.
We can take our own bikes, but there are very specific rules on them (fixed, brakeless, etc) down to the tyres (black only, no colour compound).
The bike hire per rider is £10 and includes the helmet. It doesn't explicitly state that it includes the shoes, but I believe it does.
With 48 riders, we can sell tickets that include the whole thing for only £30 all-in. That includes the session, coaches, Velodrome, bike hire, helmet hire, shoes.
I'm happy to charge you £20 if you're bringing your bike... but if roll up on a bike you can't ride on the track (the coaches have the first and last word on that), you're going to feel pretty silly. But I will give you the option, and the responsibility to ensure the bike is OK for the 'drome will be yours.
Anyhow, as you can see from the costings, it will be extremely reasonable.
I'm hoping to put the tickets on sale tomorrow evening for £30 each.
Because the price is basically as close to costs as we can reasonably be, we're going to make the tickets non-refundable. This is super-cheap, not a corp event, and if it goes well we want to do it more. The more people that turn up and ride the velodrome, the more we can do this in future. I'd love to make it a regular thing.
-
• #198
PS: I'll wait on actually selling tickets until I can verify we really need the number of coaches I'd originally written down. It affects the cost, so I won't sell a ticket without knowing the cost.
-
• #199
So since the session is 3 hours long there's basically going to be three groups of 16 who get an hour on the track each?
-
• #200
Roughly, yes.
You'll all be in the velodrome, and will be able to spectate, warm-up, etc... but the key thing thing is, the velodrome isn't anywhere near as large as Herne Hill and so it does not take more than 20 riders at a time, that limit is only 16 when the riders are not all accredited.
The exact order of riders will be determined on the day... you're free to influence this. Aside from pure logistics that restrict things (how many small or large bikes there are), I'm happy for people to figure out for themselves who they want to ride their session with.
So the smaller track means fewer riders on at a time... slowing things down from the perspective of getting everyone on the track.
On the upside... it's a damn fast track!
Taster session at Lea Valley Velodrome, tomorrow, going spare...
